its good you have your camera already. now start shooting.

***explore and observe your shots before buying primes and/or 2.8's
are you fond of wide or zoom? if you have reached a point wherein you can say what focal length is useful for you then take it from there... buy the prime lenses that suites your style first. for a cropped body like your 500D its either you start from 70/80-200 for tele or a 16/19-50/55's for wides. a mid-zoom 24/28-70/80 lense should be considered after buying both the tele and wide. mid-zooms on a cropped body isnt that useful if you are just a hobbiest. who knows you might be exploring BEOR's world that is macro/micro

***study, understand, attend workshops if there is one.
my good friend and also a good photographer nicked PNOIZE here in istorya is offering workshops you may contact him and I think "abortretryfail" is also offering. IF there are basic workshops offered in Cebu that are handled by respectable photographers from Manila dont hesitate to take it (dont say its expensive because getting unto the world of DSLR's is already expensive)

***you must understand these terms first: shutter, aperture, ISO
understand these terms dearly on which controls which. its like primary colors once you understand it you just have to mix with it to get great colors.

***learn the basic of composition... lead line, S, Frame w/in a Frame, thirds.... and so on
as many people would say..... "GOOGLE IT"

***one common mistake that hobbiest commits..... they always try to duplicate what had been done...
DONT!!! it will only makes you frustrated. your eyes are different from theirs. take your shot!

You may take my advices or you may not. I am wishing you well. Just take good pictures...
