When handling firearms, the basic principle is to always treat them as loaded to prevent unnecessary incidents, the Philippine National Police said on Wednesday. Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina, PNP spokesman, issued the reminder to all gun owners to prevent accidents similar to what happened on Father’s Day, when Private First Class Apolonio Pacioles died and his wife hurt when their son accidentally pulled the trigger of his service pistol.
Pacioles was teaching his son how to handle a gun when the accident occurred, police said. Espina said that all gun owners, whether policemen or civilians, should always stress to their children that guns are dangerous and should not be handled carelessly. “It is important to make children aware that firearms are not toys. Through education, we will realize the potential for destruction of firearms,” Espina told reporters.
Although teaching children how to handle a gun was not bad, Espina said that parents should instruct their children to always treat guns as loaded. “You have to be careful. Hindi mo basta-basta ipapakuha sa anak mo o ipapahiram (You just don’t give it or lend it your child). When you regard firearms as loaded, you will exercise extra precaution,” Espina said. All gun owners are required by the PNP to undergo a two-week seminar on gun safety after they have registered their firearms, he added.
