So no-one really got hints out of the two gravity well videos I posted earlier?

By just watching those two videos, daghan na kaayong hint ang inyong ma-kit-an.

From this point forward, I have a request/plea to those who want to post in this thread. Please do not post sarcastic remarks or comments that have nothing to do with points being discussed. If you have anything against me, then send them via PM and we'll settle them via PM. Fair enough?

Please be a decent and responsible iStorya.net poster, and kindly stick to the topic. Thank you.

ouch. you're hurting my ears, mr.rodsky. you don't have to shout.

anyway, can we please proceed now to your lame answer to this lame challenge so that we could close this thread and get on with our lives? thank you.

There were already two questions (not one) and both have been answered.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but I aim this as a perpetual thread, and will continue to keep posting questions to those interested. All you need to do is to not participate in it, if you find it lame, diba?

Thus, when the shuttle is facing into the direction of its orbit, it's in prograde orientation. If it's facing away from the direction of orbit (i.e. "lubot first" hehehe), then it's in retrograde orientation.

Nice. Much clearer to me now. Really appreciate for taking the extra mile. One more question rodsky, how do shuttles get away from orbit?

here's an image depicting an elliptical orbit compared to a circular orbit of certain satellites hovering above the earth:

kepler's second law of planetary motion states that these satellites orbiting the earth in an elliptical path have lowest and highest speeds depending on where they are in orbit with respect to earth. theoretically then, a satellite can be launched at points where these speeds matter.

this is all from a mathematical approach. for a more *practical* approach, you can refer to rodsky darling here.. (peace parts.. hehe)

although kepler is the "father of celestial mechanics", don't bother reading up on kepler's 3 laws.. they're as crazy as hell to understand, because kepler, after all, was a mathematician.. and mathematicians (by nature) are crazy you know.

but if you're really interested, here's a simple yet exciting biography of Johannes Kepler entitled: Kepler's Witch: An Astronomer's Discovery of Cosmic Order Amid Religious War, Political Intrigue, and the Heresy Trial of His Mother

This book I would highly recommend. you will know in their times how Mr. Kepler endured accusations of witchcraft on his mother, all the drama and conspiracy surrounding the Kepler's at that time. A very entertaining approach compared to the very technical aspect of his life work.

    Similarly entertaining:

I will answer that with a quite counterintuitive response--it doesn't!

Every body floating in space, is ALWAYS in an orbital path. There is no such thing as "steadily floating around in the middle of space"...everything is in motion and is on some orbit.

"Everything is always falling towards something significantly much larger than itself."

To get back to the REAL nature of your question (you want to know what happens if the Shuttle "goes away" from the earth), yes, to get away from the earth, the logical answer would be that the shuttle simply has to burn prograde (a very very long burn!), until the shape of its orbit becomes bigger and bigger and more elongated, but believe it or not, it's STILL in orbit around the earth, and it's STILL an ellipse (albiet a very thin and elongated one).

Still have no time for diagrams, perhaps an hour from now.
