my colleague here wanted to take better photos when she saw my shots (which are not that great really) and decided to buy a dslr (1000D) she was so disappointed and regretted to find out that she's still taking average shots. and also complained why she can't take macro or zoom. I told her to buy the superzoom before but was enticed to buy the dslr because that is what most people here are using.
So before you buy consider these:
1. what do you intend to shoot? maybe a regular point and shoot camera can work or if you want better reach (zoom) and has the ability to take macro shots you may want to consider a superzoom.
2. do you plan to go pro? are you an photo enthusiast? if you want to go pro or a photo enthusiast then consider a good entry level camera. you should also consider the brand since you will be married to that brand for your lenses. since you posted both canon cameras (good choice hehehehe) consider the 450D since it has more features compared to the 1000D. (remote control features, bigger screen, etc) Although the 500D is a better option with video capture and vga screen)
Finally one advise: be a photographer not a gadget head. Cause no matter what camera you have it will all depend on you to take a better picture.
