it started in the 80s in the DC area as an offshot of hardcore punk....
then it mellowed down in the 90s courtesy of Sunny Day Real Estate (some purist wont call them emo)
Then Jimmy Eat World took over the late 90s before they transformed into a pop punk band...
Record labels found Jimmy Eat World's association with the emo sound but didnt hear their emo albums. what the labels heard are the watered down pop-punk version of Jimmy Eat World. Thinking that pop-punk is emo, every pop-punk bands became labeled emo with the typical hair style... hahahaha

maski sa among bukid...naabot ang Finch, nya emo daw...

hahaha a high school kid i met at the odessy record bar actually thought im an emo because i bought Tinted Windows and My Favorite Highways hahaha. These two bands are not emo by the way. They are power pop (oftentimes mistakenly labeled as pop punk pero there's a big difference between power pop and pop punk).
