Distorted Display

I have already install Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope in my Dual Core 1.8Ghz rig. Last night I installed it to my Thinkpad R51 it work flawlessly, did some thinkering install sa updates, some add'l program and uninstalled some also. Now this morning when I tried to boot to it since I am dual booting it at the moment with my Windows XP SP3 after the GRUB OS menu the display is garbage can't see the picture (log-in window).

Anyone know how to fix this with out reinstalling it from scratch?

So you can still see the OS selection? So is windows working fine? can you go to console mode in ubuntu by pressing ctrl-alt-f1 , ctrl-alt-f2, ctrl-alt-f3 ..... ?

OS selection = Yes
Window$ = Yes
Ctrl-Alt-?? = Don't know cause all I can see is artifacts.

Reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 and now it is fine by the way used ext4 before now using ext3. Thanks for looking.
