Biggest Fire Daw: 2 Ka Barangay na Sunog
Cebu fire declared under control
CEBU CITY (4th update, 7:08 p.m.) -- Fire officials declared the fire that hit two barangays in this city as under control at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday.
In a radio report, Cebu City fire marshal Esmael Codilla said the blaze, which gutted boarding houses and stores in Barangays San Antonio and Sta. Cruz, was already under control.
Firefighters earlier rushed to save a major police armory here from the blaze that started before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Fire officials sounded the general alarm, calling all firefighting units to the area between Cebu Normal University and Camp Sergio Osmena Sr., headquarters of the Police Regional Office for Central Visayas.
Earlier reports said the fire was approaching the armory of Camp Osmeņa.
The fire department received the alarm at 5:44 p.m. and sounded the general alarm minutes later, calling on all firefighters and equipment to the site.
Cebu ended the celebration of Fire Prevention Month only seven days ago with fire officials declaring a downturn in incidents. Reports said the number of fires in Central Visayas in 2008 dropped by 25 percent compared to 2007, an improvement officials attributed to the support of local government units and an effective information campaign.
