take for example BTU (Beyond The Unknown). how many originals do they have? two (With You & Coat Of Love). they fill their set with G'nR songs, belt out a power ballad or two, sing their two original ballads, girls scream, have everybody sing along, then thats it.

how about 40 The Band? they had a few originals (good ones at that), but they never had an album. they relied heavily on The Cure and other new wave covers. I can still remember their days at Shakeys Pizza

and who can remember Joselito "ETU" Hermosilla? he had some nice songs (Fading Out on Distance was a fave). i remember talking to him, and he was complaining about lack of support, and that he was looking for a producer (he was also talking about forming a band that would be as good looking as The Dawn). he eventually released a solo album, but only like 4 or 5 years after his first song aired over Y101. too late.

same goes for other bands at the time. a hit or two and all the rest were covers. some ended producing their own albums, but production and quality were mediocre at best.

while Y101 can take credit for airing their songs and starting the movement, their exclusivity also contributed to the problem, and hurt the bands in the long run. these bands were never exposed to the "massa" since only y101 aired them. FYI, this was way before DYRT suddenly became "alternative" and NU107 (which was already a rock station in Manila) decided to expirement with jazz during their test broadcast in Cebu. seriouslly, when did Y101 became number 1 in cebu? Y101 have always catered to an exclusive audience, and this was not "massa" (something they were proud of to the point of being arrogant).

sadly, most of these bands died. well, maybe somebody can start a "Where are they now?" thread.

    BAI ZOINKS,

    YOU THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!

IT TOOK 3 YEARS AND A MONTH FOR ME TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS THREAD AND A REPLY TO YOUR UNINTELLIGENT POST.

    * BTU DOES NOT HAVE ONLY TWO SONGS. ASIDE FROM "COAT OF LOVE" & "W/ U", THEY ALSO HAVE "NGANO" WHICH WAS THEIR ENTRY ON 'C.E.B.U. HALAD SA CEBU', "LITTLE INNOCENT" WHICH WAS INCLUDED ON NCM 2ND COMPILATION AND THE DAMN YANKEES SOUNDING "HEAR THE WORDS I SAY". JUNJUN CARO WAS ALSO PART OF MAJOR FORCE WITH THEIR SONG ENTITLED "A SONG WE LIVE". THE BAND 'FIVES' IS A COMPLETE REPLICA OF BTU. THEY ALSO RELIED ON Gn'R COVERS AND DID TWO MUSHY ORIGINALS "GIRL" AND "SCARRED HEART".

    * 40 THE BAND DID RELEASED AN ALBUM ENTITLED "PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY". DURING THEIR SHAKEYS DAYS, THEY'RE STILL A BAR BAND RELYING ON COVERS NOT UNTIL PHILCITE & SACRED HEART VENUES, THEY NOW BECAME AN ARENA ROCK BAND.

    * ETU ALSO RELEASED AN ALBUM.

    * DURING THE LOCAL GROUND ERA, THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS THE "PANG MASSA". THE YOUTH, IN TOTALITY WAS CAPTURED BY Y101. AND THEN CAME THE LABELING OF LISTENERS WHEN THE "EHAS" CROWD RTNIANS AND THE INTELLIGENT ROCK N ROLLERS OF NU107.

    * AND CARLOS BALCELLS IS THE ONLY GOOD LOOKING GUY IN THE DAWN.

THANKS FOR YOUR INSIGHTS ON CEBU MUSIC BUT NEXT TIME YOU POST, MAKE SURE ALL THAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TRUE.....

ehem... excuse me po.... i think both the old and the new bands are good.... though wala ko kadungug sa karaan gyud nga mga musica sa cebu kay natawo ko late 80's, nakaabot ko sa kantang "Coat of Love" by BTU nga karon rapud nako nakita ug napaminaw.

Can i request sa ka2ng mga karaan na sa music scene... if naa ba silay mga MP3 format or any link nga pede namong mapaminaw ang mga tukar sa karaan hinirasyon kay na intriga gyud ko ug balik sa old music of cebu.

I tried to ask my older brother about some of the songs pero wala silay copya na... either gi tabla sa ilang migo or nwagtang ang tape...

But it really helps if naa moy mahatag nga link... dako kaau nang katabang sa mga rising bands of cebu.....

    Salamat.....
