im not a master ha but ill answer this.

50mm 1.8 and 18-55mm 3.5 are designed for different purpose. they even have different category(prime and zoom lens). you can get sharp acceptable wide angles shots with a 18-55mm 3.5 lens which is good for landscapes, seascapes, and the likes, and some mediocre portraits; while you can get portraits or any type of shots with great shallow depth of field with 50mm 1.8 lens. 18-55mm is a versatile lens while 50mm is a fast lens that can tolerate low light conditions.

    so thats it.

agree ko kay karlo... kuhaa ang 2, ayaw lang gud dungana... 18-55mm for the versatile focal length range and 50mm for the superior image quality, low light capabilities, and depth of field

so its the depth of field sir sa 50mm ang nakalahi jud niya from the 18-55mm IS...mao diay lahi ug kuha compared sa 18-55mm.. obviously its kinda far behind from the 3.5 of the 18-55mm IS... murag ang duha jud diay ang akong paliton ani?

how about the 50mm sir, is it already an IS type? thanx!!!

    di ko sir jerald oi^^

its not far behind, as ive said. each of the two is designed for a certain purpose. you will understand this when you get to read deep about lenses.

as for shorter focal prime lens, a camera-shake prevention feature is normally not necessary.

duha imo paliton? it depends on what purpose you shall use it. e realize usa what kind of shooting you are going to frequently do, and if the two or only one of the tow is needed, then its your decision =) anyway, both lenses are cheap but should not be underestimated =)
