    Default Alabama Shooting

    >>> Ala. gunmen kills 9, himself in shooting spree <<<

They might be rich in things but they're poor emotionally. Back when we we're kids in the 70's and the 80's our parents allow us to play with other kids in the neighborhood. We get into fights of course but, that was part of growing up. Each day that we played with other kids we learned how to handle ourselves and deal with the pressure associated with making friends. Because we go out and associate with people we have learnt how to handle the emotions that can go up and down as we explore our world. Then, most of us grew up emotionally stable and mentally strong.

But now, parents leave their children infront of the TV and violent computer games all day thinking this would be good for their children. You cannot teach you children how handle their anxieties by just letting them sit infront of the tube. After all the advances we achieve, the old ways of raising a child is still the best. But that's all we can say now, 'twas the old ways. Where have all the parents gone?

Unfortunately, slowly but surely, Filipino parents are importing this bad parenting habit from the west. There is too much TV shows and violent video games that these young Filipino parents are feeding their children. They read a lot of books about parenting that are basically written by western writers. Besides most of our child psychologist used books written by foreign specialist that they do not necesarilly conform with the Filipino culture.

Two decades ago, corporal punishment is the norm in both the school and in the house. Spanking is part of discipline and though it has it's downside, it had raised a more discipline and emotionally stable generation.

The overly-liberal Western ways of raising kids just doesn't work here. They aren't taught to be responsible. They just want immediate self-gratification.

I have a friend from Missouri whom I met in Dubai, he said, " I have everything in the US. I have my parents, my brothers and sisters, my F-150 truck, my black labrador and a 12-gauge shotgun which I use for hunting. But, I don't have a family" He is envy with us Filipinos because we have a close knit family. But, I told him that we are slowly loosing that privilege coz we've been trying to fool ourselves by following your footsteps. .

    Sad but true.
