I think the performance crown is just bragging rights sa company for their marketing... kung shoe store pa ni ... they display their premium products outside to catch attention so customers will come in but most customers would settle for the midrange product .. in short.. IMHO.. the whole performance crown thing is just to grab attention and sell their midrange cards.

Ang question is... are Nvidia's midrange products competitive to that of Ati's? Price / Performance wise?

I see it differently though. Neither NVDIA nor ATI controls the video card market, one company is satisfying part of the video market wherein the competing company has less or nothing to offer then flooding it with product variations to capture that territory and vice versa. The only market that I can see that the 2 companies are competing each other is on the enthusiast level where there are less consumers.

I agree, nvidia and ati are currently trading blows and no market domination unlike the 8800 (G80) series where nvidia had no competition from ATI for almost 2 years especially on the GTX/Ultra market.

yep, because that time 8800-series were released, ATi had to give in to AMD, budget-wise. They were also still getting good sales sa ilang 2900 series.

No, they were in deep waters with the 2900, they were rushing to let the 3800 series out w/c gave them a little leverage before the 4800 series. The transition to AMD didnt do any negative impact on product development either.

GTX295 is the best card? Well, all recent kick ass computer builds I've seen are putting this card in their builds instead of the 4870X2's. A few months back it used to be 4870X2's.

exactly. sorry bro, i didnt carefully choose my words. hehehe. i mean with its release of 2900xt, they still wanted to get money out of it as it was an ambitious card in the making for them. the transition didnt have much impacts, but they do have impacts. processor lineups that time were mostly intel, and amd was already in boiling water if it cant release any counters. anyway, enaf OT...

topic: with the release of new "king" at a hefty pricing, marketing wonders work. consumers will tend to buy a not-so-high-end product because it will be "cheaper" when pricing is being put into play. its an illusion of sort, consumers are offered dagko na pricing na murag magamay na lng ang next in line. and amd is enjoying that because below gtx 295 is a 4870x2 which is really "cheaper" na. and what falls in line? 280,260 for nvidia. for ati, its 4870, 4850x2, 4850, 4830, see, mas daghan pa gihapon lineup and ati...
