...The Four Noble Truths (Aryasatya) are the truths that proclaimed dukha and its cessation. The Buddha expounded them in his first sermon delivered to his five former companions at the deer park near Sarnath. This sermon is called the "Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma (Truth)".. The First Noble Truth is the Truth of Dukha (Suffering). That everything is dukha: birth, ageing, sickness, death, parting, unfullfilled desires, decay, etc..The second is the origin of dukha. This pertains that dukha arises from craving (trishna) from sensual pleasure, for having less or for having more, for existence and for self-annihilation...The third is the cessation of dukha. This asserts that there is an end to dukha...The fourth is the noble truth of the eightfold path, identifies the factors leading to the cessation of dukha: right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration right view and right thought...

..and thus the Buddha thus spake: "from Ignorance spring the samkharas of threefold nature - production of body, of speech, of thought. From the samkharas springs conscoiusness, from consciousness springs name and form, from this spring the six regions ( of the six senses, the seventh being the property of but the enlightened); from these springs contact from this sensation; from this springs thirst ( or desire, kama, tanha), from this attachement, existence, birth, old age and death, grief , lamentation, suffering , dejection and despair. Again by the destruction of ignorance, the samskharas are destroyed, and their conscoiusness, name and form, the six regions, contact, sensation, thirst attachement (selfishness), existence, birth, old age, death, grief, lamentation, suffering , dejection, and despair are destroyed. Such is the cesssation of this whole mass of suffering."...

It's not really killing the ego or personality but rather subduing it. You cannot kill the ego because it's part of the lower self! You can only tame and transform it! Just like taming the tiger or the demon within you!

WHATEVER, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings; believe and cling to that doctrine, and take it as your guide. - Buddha
