HUNDREDS of residents lost their homes while close to P40 million worth of government infrastructure, private properties and livestock were destroyed when flashfloods hit three Cebu towns during the weekend, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Central Visayas reported yesterday.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia called for an emergency meeting with municipal mayors, contractors, stakeholders and officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways and OCD 7 at the Capitol yesterday.
Capitol, through its social welfare office, distributed relief goods to the affected residents.
It also plans to buy construction materials as aid to residents who lost their homes.
A team from the Provincial Engineer’s Office was immediately sent to clear impassable roads in the municipalities of Santander, Barili and Samboan, said Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre.
Pelayre said his office sent heavy equipment to speed up the clearing operations. The operation is expected to be finished today.
About 250 families in Santander were affected while several bridges and roads are still impassable, said Estrellita Escaņan, provincial coordinator of the OCD 7.
Some P1.5 million worth of agricultural and livestock was destroyed also in Santander town, Escaņan said in her report to OCD 7 Director Minda Morante.
Damage to government infrastructure and private properties was pegged at P10 million and P15 million, respectively.
“Last Sunday…the bridge was impassable due to debris. (Yesterday), only one lane (of the national highway) was open to motorists because the other lane was used for the clearing operation. Some water lines were also damaged,” Escaņan said in her report.
She also confirmed that a fisherman—identified as Rudy Lozano—remained missing as of yesterday afternoon.
In Samboan town, 95 houses were damaged and 10 were wrecked after flashfloods battered the coastal barangay of San Sebastian last Sunday.
Fifteen small fishing boats were damaged while seven remained missing.
In Barangay Colase, Samboan, 21 houses were damaged and four houses were destroyed. Four fishing boats were also reported missing.
Fifteen houses were also damaged in Barangay Dalahican, Samboan.
In Barangay Tangbo, 54 houses were damaged and 11 were wrecked.
In Barangay Poblacion, 60 families were also affected; Barangay Bonbon, 15 families; and Barangay Suba, 20 families.
The estimated damage to houses and infrastructure was pegged at P5 million while damage to livestock and crops reached P300,000 and P1.5 million, respectively.
In Barili town, the three coastal Barangays of San Rafael, Sta. Ana and Poblacion have been affected by flashfloods.
But the OCD 7 is yet collating information on the number of affected residents. The affected households were evacuated to safer areas due to the floods.
In Ginatilan town, about 80 percent of the water system was cut off due to the calamity, OCD 7 said.
”Their (Ginatilan town) flood control structure was damaged,” said Escaņan. (GMD)
