Bloody Monday: Over 71,400 jobs lost in one day

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The final week of January began with a bloodbath for the job market, as over 71,400 more cuts were announced on Monday alone.

At least six companies from manufacturing and service industries announced cost-cutting initiatives that included slashing thousands of jobs.

More than 200,000 job cuts have been announced so far this year, according to company reports. Nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost over 2008, the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945.

so if you're planning to come to America, forget about it. it's not paradise here at all. if you are in the Philippines, i advise you to stay where you are. several companies here are cost-cutting including hospitals (for those RNs planning to come). it's scary.

@chad: It is honestly getting really scary. Did you get to watch 60 minutes last night? The number of people who are underemployed exceeds that of those who are unemployed. Suerte na kaayo ang empleyado karon nga maka work pa ug full 40 hours per week. Everyone's struggling right now.

I know someone nga nawad-an trabaho as a caregiver kay dili naman ka afford iyang amo magpa sueldo niya. Daghang caregivers and babysitters ron wala'y work kay nag cost-cutting ang mga tawo, dili na ga hire ug caregivers/babysitters.

nope i didn't watch 60 minutes last night but i did watch CNN while eating dinner. it's scary as hell. nagpangupot gani ko coz i'm also scared for my job (although contractor mi sa US gov't). unsaon na lang kung mawad-an trabaho, it's harder now than ever to find a job, since companies now, if they're not freezing their hiring, they're laying off people.

Circuit city literally is closing down ALL their stores throughout the US. nag liquidate na sila ron. so kamo mga naa sa America, if you have money to spare for electronics, go to CIRCUIT CITY---maka barato mo.

besides life abroad goes well if you just live within the range of your salary. not like here where the so called minimum wage is not decent enough for a family of 3 or 4 members. its a blatant denial of right to have a living wage.. at least life abroad has many opportunities.. at least life abroad has a clean environment.. and heinous crimes are competently resolved.. anyway not all the times that it is all about money.. i prefer to have a minimal income but have optimal peace of mind..

you cant have peace of mind here in the philippines except if you just look out for yourself and ignore the treacherous surroundings. in U.S. their politics is still coupled with principles. how about here? i dont see even a scintilla of sense of delicadeza from our politicos..

    GOD help Philippines.
    this makes sense! reality bites!
