PSU ticking...causes games to stutter...

your PSU is gasping to supply adequate power to your system...remember that as u put more load into your power lines, the efficiency decreases. your psu might be rated 80Plus efficiency, but what they don't tell u is that at what load is that 80Plus efficiency measured. most psu can make that 80Plus eff. grade at 70-75% load...but at 90-95% load swerte na kaayo if they are 70% efficient...

help ur psu...sooner or later the ticking sound will disappear & the burning smell will take over...

I agree to what sir simoko said, your PSU cannot handle your system at full load, thats why you heard a ticking sound when it reach at it's peak usage. but check it first, maybe the fan is also the cause of ticking. Low voltage is out of question since your PSU has active PFC at full range...

Hello mga bros...

i'm having problems with my system...generally, i think it's caused by my PSU (HEC Winpower 550 watts)...

here's the thing, whenever i play games my PSU sometimes makes ticking sounds and everytime it does that, the games stutters..it doesn't happen everytime, but when it does its very annoying...I generally have high frame rates when playing games..

any ideas what's happening??

heres my CPU spec:
Antec 900 casing
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R mobo
Core 2 Duo E6300 oced @ 3.11Ghz (with Zalman 9500LED cooler)
4gb (2x2gb) Team Extreem Dark DDR2 1066mhz memory
Palit HD4870 Sonic Dual Edition video card
1x160gb Samsung HDD (8mb cache, 7200rpm) sata
1x500gb Seagate HDD (32mb cache, 7200.11 (ST3500320AS)) sata
HEC Winpower 550 watts PSU
Liteon DVD-RW

Unless you PSU is defective, it maybe something else.. I've tried my HEC 550Watts on my Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz w/ 8800GT 1GB and 6GBRAM DDR2-800 (team elite ) ect ect and it ran w/o any problems altho the PSU was noticeably warmer since my system is peaking at around 300-350watts load.

all electronics devices degrades as it ages so maybe what it can handle then maybe too much now. the warmer a component gets the faster it will degrade.

QTF, thats the reason why i changed to a 750Watts PSU since my 550 was getting warm.

hmm,try daw gamit lain PSU na higher voltage kanang mga 600watts up kong mag ticking² pa.

btw, possible diay na nga a deffective PSU mka cause ug drop sa frame rates sa games?? mao mn gd ako na experience krn..i thought an unstable PSU would only cause lock-ups/hangs sa imo system...so far, d mn muhang ako pc kng mag games..

since your videocard is more power hungry then most probably your videocard would be the first victim to power shortage.
