Default For both casual and serious amateur astronomers: Jupiter at its brightest tonight

If you've been noticing a "very bright star" over the eastern horizon during late evening since last May, rising up to zenith as early morning approaches, that's actually not a star--that's the planet Jupiter.

Tonight, July 9, 2008, Jupiter will be brightest because it will pass its closest point with earth on its orbit. If you have a low-end telescope and have been frustrated with previous Jupiter viewing attempts, tonight is your best chance at seeing the giant and the Jovian moons. With a 4mm eyepiece you might even get to see the GRS.

Sorry for the delayed response. It's usually quite high up in the sky after 9pm, look for the brightest object (aside from the moon) over the eastern sky. That's Jupiter.

Nice man update2 lang gud. I love to watch the night sky but dont have the star map, nice place for star gazing, telescopes, etc.

You don't need a telescope nor a pair of binoculars to engage in beginner's amateur astronomy. All you need are your eyes, a decent starmap, and a good brain.
