If you've been struggling to housetrain your puppy, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that hard. If you'll follow the 7 tips outlined here, you'll have him housetrained in 14 days or less! Yes, it can be done, and here's how:
First, you need to be patient. You have to realize that this will not happen overnight but it will happen if you are persistent in your efforts. Remember that your puppy is trying his best to understand what you want but it may take him some time to get the hang of it.
Second, you have to be consistent. Make sure that you're using the same commands and take your puppy to the same spot to use the potty every time.
Third, you have to get your puppy on a schedule. You'll need to feed and water him at about the same time every day. This will help you to reduce the number of accidents that he has, since you'll know he needs to go out shortly after eating and drinking.
Fourth, use a crate to help in your puppy house training. When you buy a crate for your puppy, get one that is suitable in size but does not allow for too much moving around. This will encourage your dog to control his urge to relieve himself, since he does not want to go where he sleeps.
Fifth, make sure that you reward him for going outside. Some people use treats, however the most effective way to reward your puppy is by showing him attention and affection. This is what he wants more than anything else.
Sixth, don't play with your puppy when you take him out to do his business. He needs to learn that he is outside for a reason, and not to play. If you play with your puppy when he should be going potty, he'll forget why he's outside. Then when he comes back in, he'll use the bathroom in the house.
Finally, never rub his nose and anything. Unless you catch him in the act, he won't know why you're angry with him. Rubbing his nose in something after the fact only reinforces to him that this is where he should go in the house.
