Anyway, even if my church is one of the oldest christian group in the country it is not fun of hugging the spotlight. They know their role in the society, which is the spiritual part. We don't care if we get the credit or not.

The government can live w/o the church, but the church will go back to the medieval times w/o the goverment. Let me tell you this once again in the hope that it will penetrate in you rust-thicken medieval skull. Let us take for example that two monasteries in Mabolo. That is a super-vast properties from your proud church but are they paying real property taxes? They have billboards on those lots, are they paying commercial taxes? 99% NO. But the the poor parishioner of your church who only owns 75sq.m. of land enough for his small house will have to pay real property tax. Then if he decides to put billboards on top of his roof, he has to pay commercial taxes. Remember, this is the same parishioner that will share his little earnings to your church because according to the priest "better to give than to receive" and that this is for the church's work and other blah blah. This is the same parishioner that will pay your priest preposterous amount on baptism, wedding or burials.

Is that the fairness you want? Gezz..that only shows how medieval your mind is.

That's applicable to YOUR cult. The Catholic Church, in contrast, gives OUT more in economic terms than it takes in. The market cost of the services given by unpaid (or underpaid) Church personnel alone is worth far more than what the Church is able to collect.

If the Church didn't make up for the miserable social services of this government, the people would have revolted against this corrupt government a long time ago. Get that into your vacuous skull.

The Church gives more value in terms services than it could possibly be fairly taxed. If you really cared about fairness then you would have considered those services (which the government cannot afford to pay for). But noooo.... You turn a blind eye to the value of these services (like you turn a blind eye to government corruption) because it doesn't suit your PREJUDICE against the Church. Well, too bad for you. We shouldn't change our laws just to suit your BIGOTRY.

Here's the link to my post on the schools and hospitals run by the Archdiocese of Cebu. This doesn't count the many other social services run by the Church in Cebu. Try using what ability you have left and estimate the market value of these services. Then let's see if the government or any other private institution can afford to make up for these facilities if they should suddenly disappear. Then try to estimate the number of people who will suffer and die while you run around like a headless chicken trying to find replacements.

Wheter being taxed or not I think the most important thing about the Church is to continue their Social responsibility and not just collecting money for their personal activities and luxuries..

Because the Church contributes so much more than individuals, and more than any single private organization in the country. In fact, the Church is already doing the job of the government with its hospitals, clinics, orphanages, schools, election monitors, human rights advocacies, feeding centers, etc. And it does a better job than the government.

If the Church is forced to ya tax, then maybe it should stop contributing for free and have the government pay for all those services. In the end, those services are worth more than the tax money the Church would pay.

@mannymanador and cottonmouth: you both make sensible arguments and i commend you for it.

But my stand here is that churches should be taxed. My reason is that many shrewd individuals use this as a legal loophole/tax shield to avoid taxes from the gov't. This isn't about avoiding corruption or potential corruption being used in the taxes. It's about fairness. It wouldn't be right not to tax the Catholic church while tax every other church. That, in itself, is discrimination.

Is the concept bad, of course it is! But I can't think of a better solution. In America alone daghan na exposed na mga simbahan na lahi ug padulngan ang kwarta. Naamong ang mga tarong na simbahan tungod aning mga tawhana. Sigh. Oh, well, as long as there is a system people are bound to find ways to screw it up.

Gone are the days na baya when Catholics run the majority of our country. We should make rules that police the many emerging sub-sects of Christianity.
