NBI nabs 3 for killing of student
By Karlon N. Rama Sun.Star Staff Reporter
    With Rene H. Martel

AGENTS of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 yesterday nabbed three young men tagged as the ones behind the killing of a college student in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.

The arrest, which stemmed from a daybreak operation headed by Supervising Agent Renan Oliva, came within 48 hours after more than 1,000 people brought Gerry Giuseppe Gatungay, 19, and a father of one, to his final resting place at the Queen City Memorial Gardens.

“Thank you very much for acting on our complaint. We can now go home and be at ease (that) the persons responsible will be brought to justice,” a tearful Aimee Gatungay Gabuya told NBI 7 Director Medardo de Lemos yesterday.

Gabuya, a nurse in the United States, is the eldest of the Gatungay siblings. She came to Cebu with her husband to attend the burial.

The family went to see Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday.

They received a pledge of a financial assistance from the Cebu City Government.

Three suspects, allegedly members of the Crips gang, were arrested yesterday by NBI 7 after the family and the City Government asked for their help.

The victim’s mother Nerissa Gatungay, 50, of Baskio Road, Barangay Basak Pardo, was thankful for the swift action of the NBI 7 and the assistance from the City.

“Nalu-ag ang akong gibati nga at least the authorities gisulbad dayon ang kaso. Salamat sa cooperation sa witness, nga kuyog gyud nila, hinaut dili mausab iyang statement (I felt relieved that the authorities solved the case. I also thank the witness. I hope the witness will stand by his or her statement),” she said of the 15-year-old witness who provided the break of the case.

The witness was with the group that allegedly stabbed to death Gerry Giuseppe, a third year Mechanical Technology student of Don Bosco Technological School.

Yesterday afternoon, accompanied by NBI 7 Director Medardo de Lemos and Agent Renan Oliva, Nerissa showed up at the Cebu City Legislative Building Social Hall to personally thank Osmeña for the assistance.

The mayor said that since he will be leaving again for the Unites States this Sunday for continued medical treatment of his urinary bladder cancer, it is up to Vice Mayor Michael Rama, who will be acting mayor again, to grant the financial assistance.

City Councilor Augustus Pe Jr., committee on public order and safety chairman, whom the Gatungays asked for help, said it will be up to the mayor how much will be given.

Nerissa said Guiseppe did not do anything to be the subject of the suspects’ wrath, as he was just visiting his grandparents when attacked.

“Tripping last gyud to nila,” he said of the suspects, whom Oliva identified as Rodney Arias, Mark Jeus Aquino, Danreb Paradilla, all of Punta Princesa.

She said the three, along with a fourth suspect who remains at large, are members of the Crips gang.

De Lemos said they managed to trace the witness, who was with the group but merely acted as lookout during the attack on Gatungay, through their assets in Punta
    Princesa.

Oliva also said they evaluated the statement of the witness and were convinced that he was indeed there when the crime happened.

“We evaluated his testimony and compared it with the autopsy report, ni match man, including diin dapita sa lawas gidunggab ang biktima (where the victim was stabbed),” he said.

De Lemos said his men stalked the suspects as early as the other day, but they had difficulty in timing the arrest because they have to navigate through a crowded area.

“The agents did all the work. I’m just thankful that we were able to secure a willing witness,” De Lemos said.

NBI 7 agents are withholding the identity of the witness for security. Sources, however, said the boy will be endorsed to the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7 for debriefing.

In the statement issued in the presence of both his lawyer, Danilo Yap, and his father, John (not his real name) said he was present when the three subjects stabbed Giuseppe at around midnight of Oct. 27.

John said he was also with them they were drinking rum at a store in Sitio Bramans, Ibabao, Mambaling two hours before the incident.

He had no idea, he said, that there would be a stabbing after, although he did notice that Rodney left them in the middle of the drinking session and came back with a pointed weapon locally known as tres-cantos.

The three, together with a friend of Rodney whose name John did not know, then stood up and told him and the two other people they were drinking with that they would go ahead.

John said he begged to go with them and was eventually allowed to.

The group of Rodney, Jeus, Dandreb, Rodney’s unidentified friend and John then went to Gansiang St. in Barangay Mambaling.

There, John said, the group saw an unidentified person, who later turned out to be Giuseppe, exiting Bayabas St. and entering Gansiang.

John added that Rodney instructed them, at this point, to follow the person down Gansiang. He and Dandreb, in turn, entered Bayabas St., took a path that exited on Oliva St. and waited for the unidentified man to pass by.

John said Rodney immediately stabbed Giuseppe with his pointed weapon when he walked by.

Giuseppe, John narrated, ran towards the interior of Oliva St. Jeus, however, ran after him and stabbed him twice with a knife he’d been keeping.

John said Rodney then swore him to secrecy.

“Ayaw’g saba ha, basa ra ba kayo ka og baba (Don’t tell anyone),” he quoted Rodney as saying.

Rodney and Dandreb were the first to fall in the operation.

Both denied involvement to the stabbing.

Jeus fell in a follow-up operation after Rodney’s mother offered information as to where he could be found.

When the three placed together at the NBI 7 headquarters, however, they began passing the blame at each other.

“My brother had a very bright future ahead of him. It is so painful to know that his death was at the hands of three people who simply had nothing else to do,” Frances Gatungay, Giuseppe’s other sister, said.

The family filed a complaint form with the NBI last Oct. 31, hours before government office hours closed in preparation for All Saint’s Day.

nadakpan na jud ang mga hinampak.. patilawon sab unta ni cla ug trescantos..
