There is a fine line between a "hoax" and "enhanced conventional FX". They may have marketed it as a "3D hologram", which in itself sounds so high-tech, but actually the same feat can be done with green screens and multiple-cam angles. It's all about ratings, ratings, and yes, ratings!

UPDATE: I was right...

Technically speaking, it wasn't a "3D hologram" by definition--it was just 35-cameras hooked up to a standard Chromakey (green-screen) system.
