    Gunman ‘an expert’

LAPU-LAPU City policemen are hunting two men identified by a Barangay Intelligence Network (BIN) member as the killers of PO2 Jose Clint Cañete.

Police received the tip yesterday morning and, after a background check, discovered that the two have criminal records.

“We are 95 percent (sure) on these two,” Acting Lapu-Lapu City Police Office Director Mariano Natuel said.

Natuel said that with all the clues they have, they are convinced the attack was drug related.

He said the two were seen parking their motorcycle in front the Palace of Justice Tuesday morning while Cañete was in Branch 54 attending the hearing of the case against Edgar Palingcod, who was arrested for drugs in Cordova town.

Palingcod was caught by a seven-man police team led by Inspector Gualberto Gabales in a buy-bust operation in his house in Barangay Gabi, Cordova last June 9, 2006. Cañete was part of that team.

Police allegedly recovered from him four plastic sachets of shabu, P200 in marked money, P329 in alleged drug proceeds and sniffing paraphernalia.

Nobody could give a full description of the two, however, because when they arrived at past 10 a.m. Tuesday, one of them quickly left. The other person who watched over the motorcycle did not take off his crash helmet.

Natuel said the two waited for Cañete, tailed him and then gunned him down on the Mandaue-Mactan bridge.

Philippine National Police medico-legal officer Nestor Sator, who conducted the autopsy on Cañete, said the gunman appeared to be a sharpshooter because the wounds had “grouping.” The bullets damaged the victim’s heart, lung, liver and spleen.

He was shot less than three meters away, Sator said, and one bullet hit the upper left portion of his back. The slug pierced through his left lung, heart and exited his chest. Another shot was an inch lower, with the bullet hitting his liver while the third hit his spleen.

The fourth bullet hit the victim on the left side of his body above the hips, piercing the flesh and exiting the other side.

Mandaue City Police Office Acting Director Vicente Mersan Premne described the shooter as “a professional” based on the grouping of the wounds. Premne said the gunman held his gun with both hands when he shot Cañete.

Natuel, however, said the killers were amateurs although he did not elaborate on this.

Premne said that aside from the gunman and his driver, there were two others who served as back up. They boarded a separate motorcycle.

Premne and Marvin Sanchez of the Regional Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group (RAIDSOTG) are pursuing the mastermind of the attack.

He said they already have suspects with possible motives but have no evidence to link them to the killing.

The two are also pursuing the motorcycle and gun used in the killing. Premne said recovering these pieces of evidence is crucial in identifying those involved.

He said they are looking into drug personalities with cases filed against them by RAIDSOTG and Cañete.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7, meanwhile, will help investigate the killing.

Supt. Ritchie Medardo Posadas, CIDG 7 deputy chief, said a team of investigators led by Senior Insp. Fernando Cunanan has been coordinating with the Mandaue City police in getting leads that would help identify the killers.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ronald Roderos, meanwhile, reminded policemen to strictly follow the buddy system for police officers, especially those who will be taking court duties or those who will take the witness stand.

i just hope this tragic incident would result to more motivation and spirit of our police to fight off crime like illegal drugs and not become fearful instead.

One man can make a difference u know. May his tribe increase...

@moz_k2 - i wouldn't be surprised if it was an expert gunman. because shooting someone while you're in a fast moving vehicle is a really difficult thing to do.
