i totally agree with u regarding technical drummers being "good"... i was just bitching about people who insisted that the so called "new school" is passe'...

by the way, u where talking about "depending on the deep pocket" regarding drum playing.. what does that really mean?? i'm really curious.. i talked to this drummer from a really, really famous pinoy band and he was talking about the same thing... i really want to learn more... i have an unorthodox drumming styly brought about by my diverse musical background (punk -> reggae -> rock)... hmmm.... u can email me privately for ur reply.... It's kinda hard to put into words... I'm gonna try.
Have you notice how those funk and R&B drummers play.. like they're just RIGHT ON THE GROOVE. Solid backbeat.. everything is just sooo right.
It's like playing a groove... not playing ahead or behind the groove but playing just right like every hit is right as they were intended. And then you start zoning on the groove... you add different colors to it and you when you land that last accent, you're back on the groove.
To sum it up... it's more like a "FEEL" Thing...

Hey ezra, now i get it.. hmmm.. really cool concept.... by the way, the drummer i was talking to u about was raymund marasigan of e-heads.. he was explaining the concept to me last month or so.. i couldn't understand it at that time coz i really don't know much about basic drum playing... besides, he was quite tipsy at that time, so he also had a hard time explaining, hehehehe.... thanx for the info!!!

There's also this thing about some Jazz drummers... they PURPOSELY play behind the groove to give that "deep-pocket" feel ... I'm not really fond of those since you need to have Perfect time to play behind the groove..

Big Hair Bands ...oh I just love Bon Jovi when I want an easy listen. Kinda like how a food expert may like all the latest fusions and cuisines, but sometimes he just has to retreat to McDo ocassionally.

Hmmm... I kinda noticed that too... Some drummers do purposely play behind the groove. I really liked it. Hey Ezra, do you have perfect time? If so, how did you achieve it? How long did it take? Do you play in a band right now? What kind of music do you play? Sorry for the questions, i'm just curious...

I have good time... but not entirely perfect.. not on slow tempos anyways.. but anything higher than 90 bpm I can handle. Slow songs are hard to groove on that's why.. Anyways, I think I have good time.
How I achieved it.... from years of practice I guess. I practice with a metronome sometimes doing rudiments and exercises on my stick pad or on a whole kit. There are times that I track songs without a click-track but most often, I record with a click track to make sure that I'm on time..

I don't have a band right now.. I recently moved from NY to ORLANDO, FL and I haven't had the time to look for people to play with. The last band I played, we did power-pop stuff... like The Sundays (we had a female vocalist).
