Gobies are more of a bonog or a bogo in cebuano, and when it comes to halwan, there are 3 possible kinds of fish that are associated with that name, depending on who you ask.. Sometimes a halwan can be a snakehead, a climbing perch or a catfish.... some would say halwang tasik (snakehead) or halwang puyo (climbing perch) sometimes diferent places may have different names.

i think halwan is different, murag catfish mani akong sabot sa halwan. i might be wrong though.

Speaking of halwan, I'm not sure if you guys have heard about Raining fish phenomenon. Halwans are mostly the fish that are included in the Raining fish phenomenon in the philippines. They called it that, because fish would literally fall from the skies along with the rain.... The reason for this are Waterspouts, which are tornadoes over water that can suck up sailboats, fish, frogs and even turtles all the way up to the clouds. People as far as 100 miles inland have experienced this. I have a neighbor when i was little who told me that in thier province they experinced having fish(halwan) that evaporated and then rained down to their backyard which is way too far from the river, i did not believe him until i found out about the Raining Fish Phenomenon......

Halwan is mudfish as whenever the river is dried they could dig themselves deeper into the river bed and hibernate till the next rainy season. Literally halwan can walk from one body of water to another as they have a long and big air bladder. In Agusan del Sur you can see in the markets that they are sold and displayed on tables and alive! They are not sold dead. Displayed sizes can reach diameters equivalent to thermos bottles. We prepare halwan for supper in this manner: buy one litro sized halwan in the morning and keep it in a drum of water para ma laming aron makahabwa sa kinaon ug matangtang ang slime sa lawas. Inig ka mga alas 5:00 sa hapon lubog na kaayo ang tubig. Gamit ug dako nga kaldero, butangan ni ug mantika, toyo, sibuyas, ahos, panakot ug vitsin. Once nga magbukal na ang mantika, kuhaon ang halwan ug isulod sa kaldero nga buhi ug daghan ang magtabang ug pugong sa tabon sa kaldero kay mokisikisi man ang halwan. Gi-torture ang halwan! Pero kaonon ra pod.

Ang catfish kon na taga dagat pa na siya ang atong tawag kay ito/eto pero kon naa sa tab-ang nga tubig pantat ang pangalan ana. Naa ni bungot dili pareha sa halwan. Kon gusto mo we will include this in our river trekking kay daghan kaayo ni sa sapa luyo sa among balay.
