ako, i find ways nga ma-insecure ug samot para dili na cya maka-concentrate. hehehe

i have an experience here at work where most of my colleagues are afraid of our supervisor. of course, kinsa man sad ang dili mahadlok niya, dako ug lawas, known kaayo sa company nga maldito and kusog manginsulto. if ma-insecure siya, he'll find ways to humiliate you in front of people and pa as if nga i-correct ka niya para ingnon jud nga siya ang mas kahibalo. he didn't know that i know about his background. mao diay insecure siya because he's not a college graduate diay. undergrad diay siya and mura'g gihimo ra siya ug supervisor tungod sa kadugay niya sa company. once, he attempted to humiliate me... i smiled and said, "sagpaanay ta ug college diploma" nihilom siya and nilakaw because mahadlok siya nga makalat iyang secret diri sa office. mga licensed engineers baya ning mga tao diri then magsingka-singka siya. he doesn't even know how to use the softwares here. nisaka lang siya sa iyang position because he's so good in licking asses. now, di na jud siya manghilabot nako.

I was once employed in a publishing house that printed a major newspaper in Manila, sometime back in 1995. When I came into the company, the paper itself was not hiring anyone, but there was a soon-to-be opened nga shipping gazette, a monthly journal about the goings-on in the Philippine shipping industry. Since I enjoyed doing something new and it was a fresh start, I decided to apply as a writer for that new gazette. I then applied, took exams and passed the exams and interview with flying colors.

When the staff met for the first time, I heard some muffled groans and rolling eyes from some of my new staffmates. I whispered and asked my seatmate "Anong meron?" Then they told me, our soon-to-be editor-in-chief was this guy who was notorious for being "mahilig mang-insulto" and always wants his ways, being a well-known editor in chief for another newspaper. I didn't really mind these hushed comments that I got, and I had a very positive outlook in working with our EIC.

But as the months went by, I have to say that I really had a hard time in that job--the boss was indeed very hard on his staff, and always had unreasonable requests, and if you tended not to go with him during company outings, he would give you the "cold shoulder" for weeks and give you really difficult beats/assignments and then kept hammering you with insults.

Well one day, I chanced upon an intern that seemed to be in a daze/shock while doing her duties. Later we found out that she quit as an intern and no one knew why.

Weeks passed and one day the boss and I had this heated argument/debate about some articles I wrote that he constantly claimed were "bad" and "mediocre" and he said I was this close to getting fired for being "inefficient" at my job. So I went to HR after that ordeal and asked to be transferred to another department. The HR office accepted my transfer request and so I was moved to another publication, but still in the same office/workplace. One day I was minding my own business, comfy in my new tasks, when all of a sudden I heard a booming voice behind me, very loud, everyone heard it--"Ano? Nandito ka pa?" It was my former EIC, staring at me, and after shouting those words he shook his head and walked off. I then walked out of the room and went straight to the office of the head of HR. I asked her to schedule a meeting that would include myself, the "mean" EIC, the EIC of the new department I was in, and the HR Manager herself.

During this meeting, my former EIC was first to speak, claiming I should be fired from the entire firm because I was a "lousy employee" daw, and with that, my new EIC countered him and defended me because I actually started out very well in my new department, and never failed any assigned tasks/duties so far. The HR manager then raised certain issues towards my former EIC like "Is it true that you keep insulting your staff?" etc. etc., and the EIC kept defending himself, claiming he was only providing necessary pressure to keep the staff on their toes.

So this went on and on for several minutes, until I felt I needed a true upper hand in the situation. I then suddenly blurted out "So sir, is your taking advantage of the intern while you two were alone in the computer room, also part of all this "necessary pressure" you are enforcing upon us?" He went red with rage, and could've climbed on top of the table and punched me. I will be honest with you--when I said those words, it was a TOTALLY a wild guess on my part, very reckless, but then I had a HUNCH--but since he couldn't respond, and he actually responded in a rather brash manner ("****ng ina mo, ano nanaman yang pinagsasabi mo ha?" and so on), I guess my hunch was correct--the intern left because the former EIC indeed committed some form of sexual harassment towards her. The meeting was then abruptly concluded because the HR said they would take the matters to another level. A few days later, I heard that the mean-headed EIC left the company.

Even though I felt triumphant after that, there were other developments in my life that also made me decide to move on and leave that company after a few weeks. But if there is one lesson I learned from all that, sometimes, if you need to fight, you really have to take certain risks--the outcome might be good or bad but at least you dared to take the risk, especially if you know what's right and what's wrong.
