Plot summary
Chicago residents Neil Randall (Gerard Butler) and his wife, Abby Randall (Maria Bello), seem to have a perfect marriage and a worry-free life, but the film reveals later that Neil secretly has an affair with another woman. Abby finds out and conspires with the latter's husband Tom Ryan (Pierce Brosnan) to psychologically torture Neil for 24 hours as revenge. They pretend that Neil and Abby's little daughter Sophie is kidnapped by an accomplice of Ryan, while Abby pretends to Neil to be a victim like Neil (this is also what the audience is initially made to believe). Neil, and seemingly Abby, feel forced to comply with Ryan's demands.
Ryan forces Neil to withdraw with Abby all their savings from the bank. Tom pretends to burn all the money, but actually it is only a small part of the savings.
Also Abby pretends to be forced by Tom to deliver a document that will ruin Neil's reputation at his work. She actually hands over a blank book.
Abby lies to the police that Neil is unbalanced. As a result, when Neil reports the supposed kidnapping he is not taken seriously.
Finally Tom forces Neil to kill the woman he has an affair with, with a gun. However, it turns out not to be loaded.
