The Roman Catholic Bible included those books, to give credence to the Roman Catholic teaching of Purgatory, and among other things. The other versions, which you have called "protestant Bibles" did not include the Apocrypha. Evangelical Christians do not consider the Apocrypha as part of the canon of the Scriptures, for it contradicted the very teaching of the Christian faith wherein a person is justified solely, by the grace of God, by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone, apart from any meritorious work of the human being (you can read the entire book of Romans, as Paul eloquently discoursed about the matter). For "just as a man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Judgment comes right after a man dies, and this verse alone dispels the need for that person to undergo "purging", which the entire idea of purgatory (i.e., the chance for a man to be cleansed/purged of his/her sins in order to be accepted into heaven) came about. The verdict as to where your destination in the afterlife, is handed down while a person is still living, and not in the purgatory.
