i've read in the papers about health concerns for call center employees. As far as i know, melatonin is produced by the body to help induce sleep and calm the nervous system (and make skin beaUtiful? not sure). melatonin is also the natural cancer fighter. the prob with people who work night shifts for a period of time is that since they dont sleep in regular patterns, they cant produce melatonin normally. same with people who have insomnia. so some people take melatonin orally to help induce sleep and assist in keeping a sleeping pattern. ayaw lang anad. kung mka sleep ka without, ayaw na take pra maka produce melatonin imo body normally. I take Sleepasil. P12.00 at watsons. it has other herbs too. check www.sleepasil.com.

melatonin is produced by the body right? Right.

Taking Melatonin for a long time is sooo not advisable. It will affect the body's natural process of producing it.

    So that's a side effect.

this is an excerpt from a study entitled "Research indicates night shift workers are at high risk for cancer and heart disease".

So should night shift workers take melatonin supplements?

Mark Rea, director of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY said that:
"It is better to live a 'melatonin-friendly' lifestyle by getting eight or nine hours of dark, exercise in the morning, and a good diet."

"It's not a good idea to take melatonin on a regular basis because it is a hormone and a pill spikes melatonin far higher than is normal," says Richard Stevens, a cancer epidemiologist and professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington.

there's another thread in this forum opened to serve as a precaution to night shift workers.

ayaw gyud ang sleeping pills coz it has a rebound effect. Mas magka insomnia nuon ka ana. Melatonin, as others say above, is a natural hormone but produced artificially. Nagresearch ko bahin ani kay insomniahun pod kaayo ko. Naay 1 week nga 27 hrs lang ako sleep. Grabe gyud. It's not advisable to take melatonin on a long-term basis kay it will result to other problems. The allowed dosage is only 3mg. Never exceed it kay it will cause rebound insomnia. I bought mine from GNC at P315/bot of 60 tablets, 1 mg. And melatonin can be produced well if we have more serotonins in our bodies which is acquired by exposing ourselves to sunlight. So, mao pod na ako advise nimo.... magpa-init ka pirmi para daghan kag serotonin. Ang serotonin during the evening will be converted to melatonin. Try researching about it also on the net. Try Wikipedia.

As a nightshift worker I am particularly interested in this avenue of research.
Are there any indications that taking melatonin pills would help to counter the detrimental effects of night work and what would be the correct dosage and time to take the pills?

Taking melatonin pills is a risky thing. It can reset the circadian clock. Best to do it only if guided by a doctor. It is normally better to use light at the end of sleep and amber glasses a few hours before sleep to reset the circadian clock. If you regularly work night shift, the best plan is to have a regular time during the day for sleep in a dark room, and use light and glasses as above. Try to keep the light exposure after sleep and the glasses on before sleep at the same time on weekends, even if you don’t sleep the same hours. That will keep your clock set at the same setting. Good luck
