Please read the link I posted before. It explains about DMZ and its purpose.
As I stated before, DMZ also is behind a firewall with the ports open only for the public services such as web, mail or ftp.
Anyway, I never had any issues with my port forwarded solution. First the nat router, then the firewall on the server. Thats also a 2-level protection.
