Core2duo 3.0 and Core2Quad 2.4

id get the quad and overclock it to 3.0ghz and if you can, clock it higher. i have mine @ 3.5ghz used to have a e6600 running at 3.5ghz as well, game wise no difference noticed at all with teh quad. (gaming @1920x1200 res, all eye candy set to max including AA and AF. games include company of heroes, CoD4, bioshock and crysis demo[had to turn off aa and af plus a notch down with shaders for crysis]) video and audio encoding (which i do a lot, movies to watch at work on my zune hehehehe) on the other hand e6600 no contest.

at stock speed, E6850 is still dominant in most application. But if your going to overclock Q6600, it is worth (no contest on that).

Most of the application today, core2duo is more than enough and i believe for the coming application as well. Maybe after 2 years, it is a must to have a quad.

Or you can wait for Q9450 (2.66ghz, 45nm,12mb L2cache@$316), Q9300 (2.5ghz, 45nm, 6mb@$270).

For me, i will be very glad and satisfied if i can use my cpu for a year or two. Besides, if i am going to upgrade, it will be much faster than i have.

depends on the purpose... but if its only for Word, Excel or any other office applications, Core2Duo will suffice.

So your telling him to grab the more expensive processor for office work ?

since he posted about asking why the 3.0Ghz C2D ( E6850 ) is more expensive as compared to the 2.4Ghz C2Q ( Q6600 )
even if quads are expensive for office work alone but given both processors as a choice the quad wins in both price and performance.

99.99% of the time the G0 Q6600's can reach 3.2Ghz ( 400 * 8 ) at stock cooler and stock voltages, 99.98% of the time it can clock to 3.6Ghz on an after market cooler at 1.4xx volts.
This is all assumed your memory and motherboard can clock to 400 w/c not impossible for a P35 and a DDR2-800 module.

I have no personal experience in movie encoding with the Q6600, how much faster is it compared to the duals provided they are running on the same clockspeed?

Im not sure if i can recall the exact numbers but the hottest P4 is rated at 195watts TPD where as the hottest C2Q is 105W ?
