Default Passport surrender rule in Vietnam

Hi guys! To anyone here who's been in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh, is it a standard procedure for tourists to surrender their passports at the hotel reception upon check-in? I'm still bothered by what my friends and I experienced in our recent trip. Good thing the hotel staff was kind enough to return our passports when we offered to surrender our IDs instead.

In our case, we were told that our passports will be returned upon check-out. And since we found the situation very uncomfortable, we politely asked na lang if we could surrender our IDs instead. Good thing mababait naman sila and they agreed after registering the details contained in our passports sa systen nila. Paranoid lang siguro kami because of the many "scam" stories na narinig about the place. But overall, we had a great, unforgettable experience in Ho Chi Minh. 😊

And with the issues of identity theft, it's just so difficult to entrust your passport to anyone di ba?

I've read somewhere that only hostels or budget hotels are usually the ones implementing this rule.
Those 3-star up hotels does not follow this practice.
Better give a photocopy or have a photo taken instead.
