if i were you, i would go for the AMD64x2 which around 6k and stable pa iyahang socket for the upcoming years.
unlike in the intel class they are always upgrading like around the s478 to LGA775 to G33 and to P35 and right now naa na say bag-o which is the x series..

Also i am not discouraging for the intel class.

So the choice is up to you!

correction... G33 and P35 are not sockets... they are chipsets... and both using LGA775
AMD on the other hand is the one constantly migrating... socket 939, socket AM2, then socket AM2+ ----> this happened in a span of LGA775 for intel... meaning 3 na ka socket migration ang AMD, while wala pa na-ilisan sa intel ang ilang LGA775.

it depends man pud @ what price range. if naa lang ka sa low end, nindot ang performance sa amd clock-per-clock, although, dili kaayo layo ang performance. pero when it comes to high end, intel na pud ang naa dako edge sa clock-per-clock performance, siguro ang X2 6000+ ra ang maka compete sa E6600-E6700.
