Why would a supposed "loving god" relegate women to such subservient roles? The following are just a VERY few examples of the many. Wives can't speak? Selling you daughter?! Rape is O.K.?! Auction rates for your family?! The Bible is seriously screwed up! Not the word of any god I would subscribe to!

    Keep Quiet!...

1 Corinthians, 14:34-35: "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."

    How to sell your daughter...
Exodus 21:7-8: And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her."

    Man Rules...
Genesis 3:16: "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."

    Take my daughters....
Genesis 19:8 "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes"

Lot and his daughters have intercourse in a cave and each daughter gets pregnant.
Genesis 19:30-38: "And Lot went up out of Zoar..., and his two daughters with him; ...and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day."

Slave women don't count in rape....
Leviticus 19:20: "And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free."

    God's $$$ rate for Men & Women...
Leviticus 27:3-7: "And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver... And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels."

Pretty captive women are fair game, if you want them...
Deuteronomy 21:11-14: And seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and hast a desire unto her, that thou wouldest have her to thy wife. Then thou shalt bring her home to thine house, and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails. And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will..."

    Abraham's Wives...
Genesis 25:1 "Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah." [Only problem is that Abraham already had a wife (Sarah), and an abandoned concubine (Hagar).]

Esau "takes" two wives. 26:34 and then a third 28:9
26:34, 29:29 "And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. ... Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife."

Jacob's two wives and two concubines...
Genesis 32:22: "And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, "

    Esau wives...
Genesis 36:6: "And Esau took his wives...."

After the massacre of Egyptian children, Moses wants all males... not burnt females and children.
Exodus 13:2: "Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine."

Simplified version of birth and offerings (see Leviticus 12:1-5)...
Leviticus 12:6: And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or dove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest

    Haven't you asked yourself...WHY?
hehehe thats what the leap of faith for. you dont have to think about it.

The thinking that god is beyond judgement can lead to the thinking that we must not question god, regardless of what he instructs us to do.
When confronted with a clear moral (or rather immoral) situation, believers duck into the usual blather that god is beyond question and reproach. If a believer has no problem justifying the rape and murder of an innocent child, slavery and others then such a believer can easily justify other atrocious acts.

    free thinkers make lousy slaves.hehehe

The usual uninformed anti-Biblical accusations with feministic overtones. **yawn**

Pardon me for being so frank.

It was society (not really God) that made women during the olden times as second class citizens.

The Bible cannot be interpreted so literally that anything it says is from God ALONE. We must remember that the Bible is the word of God in the words of men. The circumstance for which the scripture was written included or even highlighted the culture that existed then for us to fully understand how people lived their lives and how God revealed/intervened in those situations. We need to sift/separate the spirituality and the temporal truths that exist in the Bible because the Bible can not pretend to be an authority on just about any subject. Doing so would only confuse us e.g., evolution and the bible is just one example.

As to the question of subservience of women in society...did God really say that women have no say in everything that she had to live miserably all her life ? If you read Genesis 3:16: "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." If you read this literally, you would come to understand that God places women less in society - her role limited in domestic matters. Or put it simply, God doesn't like women.

But it is not to be interpreted that way. This verse only cites a very basic fact about women after the fall of man (Adam and Eve). The writer of Genesis, who according to scholars was Moses, believed that roles had changed for both man and woman after the fall. In some sense, God only said hey guys, "you just ate that junk and look what's gonna happen next." However, Moses wrote it in a different light where he had to relate what God predicted to happen in a language or in strong themes where people could understand from the cultural perspective (which is theistic in moses' time) that there is a serious repercussion when you disobey God.

Thus IMHO all the other texts/versed presented in this thread may need a little rethinking...I don't think that God really wanted women to live in subservient roles neither is he is so interested how women should relate to their husbands in matters of rights in the house. God is only interested in the spiritual relations between him and man/woman.

Besides, God has given us the freedom to determine or choose what kind of culture or society we should adopt. And history can firmly affirm this fact. He never imposed or created such "man-over-woman" culture because that's the least of God's concerns and if he did, he would have wiped out long ago this planet for allowing women to vote or work or must have put them in the Ten Commandments to say: "Thou shalt not let a woman be above or equal to man." or would have not allowed the writers to include Ruth, Esther and Mary in their stories.

i for one would not consider the female species as something that just sprouted out from one of Adam's ribs.

do i believe in the bible... hhhmmm.. well, they do serve for me as a source of inspiration. i could not blame if men in that era considered women as inferior. if you are a zealous believer of God, you would definitely get the idea that we are all created equal, before the eyes of God.

Please don't let me start with castration complex and Electra complex... as for me... we should strive to treat everyone equally. same with the homosexuals. now tell me, is it because the bible only states the creation of a Man and a Woman, how do you make of them? well, thanks to Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and the likes, we happen to come up with the word evolution. Not everything in the bible is correct. Common sense would tell you that.

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist but according to the things i have heard in the national geopraphic(well they often referred to it as an anti-christ channel)... there were gospels which were written by women in that time... not to mention the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the likes... but they were not included in the bible. Who decides what gospels are to be included in the bible? definitely not one of them is a woman. but they do so believe that women should be treated inferior to men.witht the bible's existence, women have to struggle hard to prove their worth and have to hardly cope up with discrimination against men. "but the thing that kills me makes me stronger"

As for women and the bible... Heck! that is a matter of choice. as for me, well, all i could say I believe in God not the prophets nor any dillusional punk who thinks he have just got a word from God.
