Actually, this isn't really a problem withe OpenOffice itself, but with Microsoft. The specifications for the .doc or .xls formats are not open, so the OpenOffice team had to mostly reverse-engineer and study the MS formats to ensure compatibility. The default formats of OO.org are actually not that bad (ODT, ODS, etc), since these are based on the OpenDocument format.Originally Posted by vladmire
