Ideal? Between the choices, I'd pick karate. Aikido is defensive by nature, thus it's not really focused on strikes and aggression. Karate is more well-rounded and versatile in both attacks and defense.
But practically, any of the two will do. Actually, any martial art discipline won't matter, it all boils down to the practitioner.
Ideal (noun): The idea of something that is perfect
I am not comfortable to use the word ideal since each style has its individuality and uniqueness perfected by the practitioner. I would rather use the word "practical".
For me, karate is more practical
akido - mura ra nag tai chi, nindot na og pasingot gamay imo gi pangita, pang physical fitness
karate - practical, mas nindot nga self defence
no sense of comparison aning duha..two very different styles..
its like comparing a car and a bicycle..each has its pros and cons
it is still sensible to compare this para sa mga tao nga dili expert/knowledgeable sa aikido ug karate.
direct comparison will make you understand things better
study both nalang to know them better
If you think in terms of offensive effectiveness, then karate rules between the two. For pure defense, aikido will take the spot.
I am practicing taichi, which I could say is also a deadly defensive martial art if one studies it a bit deeper. It's not just an exercise routine for, say, "pasingot ra" as barcode here pointed out. Taichi and aikido, however, are indeed similar as they emphasize on the use of chi (ki) rather than pure muscular strength.
Depende ra as to what's your aim in practicing. Aikido is a very deadly martial art too if done and practiced properly. I assume that almost everybody here knows who Steven Seagal is.akido - mura ra nag tai chi, nindot na og pasingot gamay imo gi pangita, pang physical fitness
i wish i could see an aikido and tai chi practitioner joining the MMA
so they could prove that what im saying is wrong
