IIRC, string theory is just one of the many attempts to explain everything. (Theory of Everything)
It tries to explain things such as gravity. Why there is gravity. Why mass and gravity are related.
It tries to break down the atom down to its most basic and fundamental part, called strings.
According to what I've read, these strings can "oscillate" (to those unfamiliar, try imagining radio waves. They move back and forth at a specific interval). Now, these strings can oscillate differently, which would create different particles. (An example is the vibration of the guitar strings make different notes, depending on the vibration). IIRC, bosons are one of these particles.
Example of a boson is the infamous"God particle", which is the Higgs boson. This boson was only "theorized" by Dr. Higgs decades ago and was only proven correct during the experiments held at LHC. (Large Hadron Collider, basically smashing 2 atoms at almost the speed of light, allowing us to see the fundamental particles of an atom)
