    - Successful drive against smuggling. In 1966, more than 100 important smugglers were arrested; in three years 1966-1968 the arrests totaled 5,000. Military men involved in smuggling were forced to retire

    - Greater production of rice by promoting the cultivation of IR-8 hybrid rice. In 1968 the Philippines became self-sufficient in rice, the first time in history since the American period. In addition, the Philippines exported rice worth US$7 million.

    - Land reform was given an impetus during the first term of President Marcos. 3,739 hectares of lands in Central Luzon were distributed to the farmers.

    - President Marcos initiated, together with the other four heads of state of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore), the formation of a regional organization to combat the communist threat in the region – the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

    - Government finances were stabilized by higher revenue collections and loans from treasury bonds, foreign lending institutions and foreign governments.

    - His 21 years in power with the help of U.S. massive economic aid and foreign loans enabled Marcos to build more schools, hospitals and infrastructure than any of his predecessors combined.

I think initiated by Marcos was not far fetched cguro, but it was signed by Narciso Ramos who was the Foreign Secretary during President Ferdinand E. Marcos's government and served from 1966 to 1968.

The Philippines became one of the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and this is during the time of Marcos.

please e mention daw unsa pa ang mga dili tinuod para ma correctionan.

sa ako nabasa boss kay - The five Foreign Ministers who signed it - Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand - would subsequently be hailed as the Founding Fathers. Then as I've said Narciso Ramos was the Foreign Secretary during President Ferdinand E. Marcos's government. Indirectly cguro ang involvement ni Marcos since it would be rightful na ang Foreign Sec niya ang mo push through sa asean.

During the 1960’s, there were repeated unsuccessful attempts to create an association among Southeast Asian nations. Originally, the Philippines and Malaya had sought an organization similar to the European Economic Community, but they assented to Thailand who insisted on an association with a looser structure. A new organization was required. There was the SEATO, or the South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) but it also failed due to lack of agreement.

On August 8, 1967, the "Bangkok Declaration" gave birth to ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.ASEAN united five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Yup i remembered seato in my high school days lessons. However, it didnt last long. It was primarily created to block further communist gains in Southeast Asia, SEATO is generally considered a failure because internal conflict and dispute hindered general use of the SEATO military. SEATO was dissolved on 30 June 1977 after many members lost interest and withdrew.

Not all seato members are not from asian countries like new Zealand, uk, us, pakistan and france.

I think if people who glorify Marcos now were really back to 1986, they would find themselves swept away by the public outrage against the Marcos administration that characterized that period of time. You'd hardly find anyone who will share your love of the Marcoses. However, what's led back to this Resurrect-Marcos movement has been this long-standing disappointment over the failed "promises" of EDSA. That sentiment is understandable but misguided.

What I'm puzzled by this phenomenon is why people think that we actually had a great President. I would say that not a single President that's come and gone since our independence have been great. That's a fact.

And to say that Marcos' era days were so much better is hogwash. I lived through two-thirds of Marcos' term, and there were brownouts almost everyday. Every mass media (TV, newspapers, radio) was government controlled, so it's understandable why people in those days felt the government was less corrupt then. Would I have loved to go back to that period of time? H-e-l-l no! Old folks like to reminisce about the good old times, because that's what old folks normally do! They'll always say prices of goods were cheaper then while ignoring the fact that you need to adjust for inflation. They'll always say it was safer to roam the streets then while ignoring the fact that population in their locality was 1/10th of what it is now.

Sure, there's lots of infrastructures to show for after a 20-year rule, at the expense of bankrupting our government and enriching a handful of cronies. In the words of Imelda Marcos "We practically own everything in the Philippines." However, I'll admit that it's hard to choose between the crooks then and the crooks now.
