About the cpu, i strongly suggest you go for the i3-4160 (without T) then shape the power profile by limiting the multiplier to match that of the T version (or even lower) and downclocking the igpu if your chosen board supports it. i3 btw because you need the hyperthreading.

i agree with the i3. as well as the 4160 and not the T. as the T version is impossible to find in the philippines.
as for the PSU i was even thinking of a 350-400w.

im even thinking of using mobile HDD's for the NON-Camera HDD. however the camera HDD has to be rated for 24/7.

low voltage rams are a good idea.

but somehow i still cant seem to shut the door to the Q2900 itx of asrock..... that 10W power draw. i have a feeling my cameras will give this processor a hard time.

    For sharing purposes:

naa man ko FreeNAS servers diri na nag dagan ug 24 hrs... allow me to share aning duha for benchmarking... gamit nila nko diri kay file server ra gyud ni sila...

(tag-sa)2x lang nako'g kuha'g I & W ug sunod lang ug post. let me post the 1st one...

    FreeNAS server 1:
CPU: SB Celeron G530T (35 W TDP)... dual core
CPU cooling system: PC Cooler Q100M
    MOBO: Biostar H61MLC
MEM: 8 GB (2 x 4 GB Avexir Core Series DDR3 1333 MHz)... running @ 1066 MHz only since this is the native mem speed that the G530T supports
    GPU: GT 210 1 MB DDR3
    NIC: Intel Gigabit PCIe 1x
HDD: 4 TB (2 x 2 TB Toshiba 7200 rpm) running individually (scrapped RAID kay wala'y gamit nko)
    PSU: Antec Earthwatts EA380D
Exhaust fan: 1 x 80 mm 2,200 rpm PC Cooler

    Note:
    - sa load condition ani nila kay nag copy sya ug files. ang duha ha HDD nag copy individually from the other NAS.
    - kun ang set-up mag record ug video like sa purpose ni TS, no idea ko unsa'y usage sa CPU, RAM ug actual drain from the wall.
    - pasensya na sa pictures ha, pwerteng bati-a sa phone-cam nko... tsk tsk tsk

    and here's the other one...

    FreeNAS server 2:
    CPU: Conroe-L Celeron 450 (35 W TDP)... single core
CPU cooling system: Deep Cool Alpha 30
    MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-AM
    MEM: 4 GB (2 x 4 GB Kingston Value Ram DDR2 800 MHz)
GPU: Nvidia Quadro 256 MB DDR2 (PCI)
    NIC: Realtek Gigabit PCIe 1x
HDD: 2 TB (2 x 1 TB WD Green) running individually (scrapped RAID kay wala'y gamit nko)
    PSU: Cooler Master 420 W
Exhaust fan: 1 x 80 mm 2,200 rpm PC Cooler

so, sa fact na gi share nko, dako kaayo'g impact ang architecture sa CPU, mobo and mem modules kun mangita ta'g low wattage/ampere on a 24/7 rig... kaning mga current "Ultra" or "U" CPUs sa intel, nice gyud kaayo ni sila kun mangita ta'g 24/7 rig na mo resulta ug low electric bills... in short, for the "Power to Performance Ratio", go Intel's NUC Core Series system... limited lang gyud ang connectivity "right outside the box" but, naa man pud work around na mahimo to satisfy our need or requirement w/ regards to the connectivity...

my office i3 4160, gt 630, ssd, 1hdd idles at about 37w. full cpu load at 78-80watts.
in contrast my c2q at home with 2hdd, 1 mobile hdd with gt430 idles at 79watts.

maybe the gpu makes a bit of a difference pero dako ra diperensya sa idle power consumption.

    @ bro MarXX,

lisod man kaayo pangita-on ning mga Low Power CPU na on-board w/ 4 SATA ports... but, how about in ani... basin naa ni dha... naa sya'y PCIe 1x and 16x na pwede butangan ug additional PCIe SATA add-in card then ang isa na PCIe slot, para additional Gigabit NIC... ang on-board NIC sa mobo sa link kay Realtek 1 Gigabit naman... puno lang ug isa ka Realtek PCIe 1x NIC... but, ang CPU (Celeron J1900), no idea ko kun ok ra ba's application nimo na real-time video recording pud... on a NAS application, we'll, kaya kaayo ani nya...

    celeron can suffice.

CCTV streams is just like uploading file into the server. Calculate bandwidth according to number of Cameras, Quality, and resolution. Go straight for pure Gbe network for this scenario. this stream concerns motherboard bus speed (pci-e NIC or PCI NIC), IMO this would not cause cpu/gpu spikes.

    FYI:
I saw DVR transformed computers in a big hotel. Each host records 16-20 cameras in full resolution with audio ha.. and this cpu's are spec'd at pentium dual core, 2gb ddr3 ram, single 1TB hdd, and I can still use those computers with no slow downs.

nag duda gyud ko dili kaya sa camera ang j2900 labi na kung 720 cams. sa ako research sa ispy, 8 -720p ip cams mag lisod na daw ang i7 ana. basin exaggerated ni.... mao na ill rethink my camera mentras wala pa na decide ang cpu. and yes camera recording is cpu bound. mu depend pa gyud na sa compression. but of course i dont expect all cams to be running at the same time, theres this record on motion detection feature. on another note some ip cams have a memory card slot, and upon motion detection records to this memory card. how this memory card affects cpu not sure ko kay ang pc igo naman lang mu backup aning memory card. again not sure pako ani. i think mao ni ang gi pasabot ni amdinfinum.

the processor requirement depends more on the compression used, kung mp4 gani kalas processor. kung avi lang dili kaayo pero ang mp4 ma view nimo over the web with mobile devices, ang avi dili.
for me okay rako sa avi. besides security wise only i know where the pc is as it will be well hidden.
this will be gigabit network. even tho the camera is only 10/100.
the ip cameras i want are those with pan tilt zoom.

mao ni ako prob sa j2900 socket on chips, when my need expands, i cannot upgrade the processor. standard motherboards nalang gyud ko. kaay naa pa rabay audio. most of these ip cams have audio features.

yeah i think at least an i3 gyud ni dah.... maynalang ning mga i3 ubos kaayog mga idle.
