Default Please recommend me a NAS Rig

Good day istoryans, especially to the helpful hardware gurus here.

Ga plano unta ko mag himo ug "BUDGET" NAS/FreeNas or basically a pc where i can store all my media files and maybe important docs pud and make it accessible at least to my laptops/pc at home.

Unsay ma recommend ninyo na components. This will be purely for media storage ang maybe playback pud of videos from time to time. I would appreciate if you could give me the cheapest rig i could build for this use and if pwede kana mapalit lang pud na components locally.

    What i already have:

    2 x 3TB WD Green
    1 x Seagate Baraccuda
PSU 600W seasonic gold (dili ba ni siya overkill?)

    Thanks in advance.

for a FreeNAS box bro, you can use any old HW... 1st FreeNAS box nko kay naka Pentium D 925 then gi ilisan nako'g Celeron 450... FreeNAS server sa akoang kumander. 4GB mem sya w/ 4 TB HDD (2 x 2 TB WD Greens). PSU kay CM 420 W then akoa gamit diri kay Celeron G530T w/ 8GB mem... and 4TB (2 x 2 TB Toshiba 7200 rpm drives)... PSU kay Antec EA350... sa akoang case, over kill ra pud ning PSU. a 200 ~ 250 W PSU will do the job nicely ra unta... mga extra man ni nko so, mao akoang gi gamit...

@lloyd_joy: thank you kaayu sir for the input. so far mao ra ni akong present hardware components, i don't have old hardwares since i just gave them to my relatives in the province. mura'g nabasol na nuon ko gamay dah lol.

how would i know sir if nakagigabit speed ang network nako? i am using PLDT broadband, kanang tag 1,000 ra, then ilang mode/wifi router rapud gamit nako. if i get it right NIC is like the netword card/adaptor? if so do i need to buy a separate PCIe card with that specs or naa na mobo with that feature? thank you again

ang pasabot sa Gigabit speed kay ang imohang connection sa home network not the internet. you need a gigabit switch for this. diri nimo i connect ang FreeNAS ug ang PC's nimo... then ang switch, ad2 nimo sa router i-connect. kun gigabit speed na ang imohang router, you don't need a gigabit switch kun sako lang ang numer of PC na i-connect nya on a wired connection.

ang "preferred" sa FreeNAS OS na NIC on the server kay intel based for speedy transfers. pwede ra mo gamit ug uban... like sa Realtek or VIA based onboard NIC pero, mas hinay sya ug transfer rate... bisan gigabit speed ang chip nila. sa clients, like sa desktop nimo, no need for an intel based NIC naka. the mobo's onboard NIC will do...

    gigabit network

ur onboard LAN sa board is 10/100/1000 as standard nowadays + cat6 cables + gigabit switch < u have to buy this >

    any H61 mobo
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-H61-S3 (rev. 1.0)

LAN - 1 x Atheros GbE LAN chip (10/100/1000 Mbit)

    low end dualcore celeron

    @ bro, butitoy,

korek... a G1610, G1620 or their haswell counterparts or AMD's counterpart offering will do the job nicely as a FreeNAS server. but again, recommend ko'g add-in PCIE based Intel Gigabit NIC para pas2x compare sa uban gigabit NIC chip... mao ni ang recommended gyud sa programmer sa FreeNAS OS, sa community ug sa akoang personal experience...

mga boss, limited ra ba ni siya to wired connections? or pede ra pud ka serve as client mga wireless gadgets like laptop or smartphones/tablets?

^ pwede ra maka serve sa wireless bro like sa notebook PC kay home network man nimo ang gamiton nya... NAS is a "Network Attached Storage" man... so, anything na naka connect sa network... either home or work... depende sa configuration kay maka access sa drive... sa smartphone or tablets, personally, no idea ko kay akoang phone na gamit kay "Not so-smart" phone man ni sya ug wla pud ko'y tab diri... hehehe... but my notebook PC on wireless connection can access the FreeNAS though... ug ang mga desktop nko na wireless, maka access sila sa FreeNAS server nko pud...

if size isn't a problem then regular matx case/motherboard will do. medyo costly man mitx but its your choice. pwede ka mag lga 1155/1150 then parisan ug celeron. or maybe katung mga mobo+cpu combo. check lang na naka gigabit lan sya and have enough sata ports na imo need. then use FreeNAS.

    good luck.
