A FLORIST was robbed and stabbed to death before dawn yesterday inside his shop in Sitio Sikatuna, Barangay Day-as in Cebu City.
The body of Daniel “Jun” Cañete, owner of JMC Wedding Creations, was found by a female employee who arrived around 7 a.m. in his rented studio-type apartment, which also served as his flower shop. Ivy Medalle was the one who called the police.
Cañete, 45, was stabbed in the abdomen several times. Bruises were found on his arms.

The police have yet to identify a suspect.
Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) Chief David Señor said Cañete lost two laptops, two cellular phones and P250,000 in cash.
Questioned
The police invited a 16-year-old boy for questioning but he was later released.
Mark Stephen, 21, Cañete’s oldest son, said the victim had no enemies.
The Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office was the first to respond to the alarm but turned over the case to the TRS upon learning that the victim was robbed.
Señor said the victim’s bruises indicated that he tried to defend himself against his attacker.
Cañete, a native of Pagadian City, rented a unit at VR Apartment, which serves as his shop and home.
Unlocked
Medalle told Sun.Star Cebu that when she arrived at the shop, she called out to Daniel but there was no answer. She said she used her spare key to enter but she realized that the door was already unlocked.
When she entered the shop, she said, she saw Daniel’s body on the floor in a pool of blood.
Medalle said her co-worker, Hernani Timtim, arrived shortly.
Señor said the police are still looking for a nearby security camera that can show who entered Cañete’s shop. He said the crime may have occurred late Sunday night or before dawn.
Scream
He said the florist’s next-door neighbors said they heard a scream but they thought Daniel was having a party.
Serafina Alimiñe, a street sweeper, told the police that about 3 a.m. she saw a man sitting outside the flower shop. She did not see his face, however.
Mark Stephen told the police that last Saturday, his father got paid P150,000 for three wedding packages.
Señor said the victim’s son told them that it was Daniel’s habit to deposit his earnings Monday.

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy was arrested yesterday while two others were invited for questioning for the death of florist Daniel “Jun” Cañete.
The fingerprints of Benjie (name withheld for being a minor) matched the prints lifted from the victim’s drawer inside his flower shop on Sikatuna St., Cebu City.
Benjie was also identified by two witnesses who saw him in the area at dawn over the weekend.

Police believe three persons were involved in the killing of Cañete, whose body was found inside his shop last Monday morning.
They suspect Benjie’s friends—Arnold and Chito, both 16—were also involved.
The two minors voluntarily went to the City Intelligence Branch of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) yesterday to clear their names.
Denial
CCPO Director Noli Romana said they have yet to prove if Benjie was the one who stabbed Cañete.
“We are sure that he was there during the incident because of the fingerprints,” Romana said.
Benjie, for his part, denied the allegations.
He said he, Arnold and Chito first met Cañete last Friday night in Talisay City.
Benjie said Cañete offered them a drink and asked them to accompany him.
“We went with him to his shop and he gave us food to eat,” he said in Cebuano.
He said Cañete gave them P1,400 in exchange for sexual services.
After that, he said Cañete told them to leave.
“Last Friday was the first and last time that I saw him,” Benjie said.
He said he was surprised to hear about Cañete’s death last Monday. The next day, the police went to his house in Pooc, Talisay City.
Corroboration
“Ingon sila nga duna kunoy koy kalibutan atong pagpatay niya (Cañete) bisan dili gyud tinuod (They said I had involvement in Cañete’s death, which isn’t true),” he said.
Benjie’s mother Melissa, who also went to the CCPO yesterday, said her son did not leave home last Sunday night.
“Naa ra man siya sa balay hangtod Lunes sa buntag (He was home until Monday morning),” Melissa said.
Arnold and Chito corroborated Benjie’s story.
Since Benjie is a minor and cannot be detained, he is under the custodial investigation of the CIB.
Chito and Arnold were also allowed to go home after police took their fingerprints.
Romana said that even if they’ve arrested Benjie, their investigation will continue because they have yet to determine Cañete’s killer.
