I don't think you need to take u philosophy or a formal study unless your purpose is to get a job or a position that requires accreditation. All you need is an open minded, inquiring mind, and google is your best friend in terms of resources.

This has been a question philosophers discussed and pondered upon. 2 school of thought. Determinism and Existentialism.

Determinism teaches that No, we are not really free. We are determined by the things which conspires this universe. An example of this is the Stoics, which is founded by Zeno. Zeno and his followers believe that if one should attain true happiness. He must not go against what the world has prepared for him.

On the other hand, Existentialists teaches that "man is condemned to be free" Number 1 proponent of this is Sarte. He believes that man makes who he is and is not determined by some higher intelligent being.
