perfect example of why an actual audition trumps any 3rd-person review. we do have different tastes and preferences.
in my case, i do find it dark compared to the lively HD600 but i haven't really tried it that long compared to yours since you have already owned it.
Since your are just driving it using the E07k, why not get a much better amp that the 650 deserves? @donkeanu 's Burson is one mean beast. even if its pre-owned and now discontinued, im still drooling over it. i just don't have the budget right now. lol

Hey man! You've got an HD650 too right? Are you telling me you aren't happy with it paired with the Burson?
Let me guess, since you're going portable, would the "balance" thing not be far behind? Ha ha ha.
What are your portable plans? There are only i think 3 portable balance amps makers.
I'm more into portables actually and since i already got a balance cable with a Hirose end, i could no longer set my sights on other options.
Also i'm not receiving any 13th month pay nor any bonus.
But i know your Burson will go to the right hands, likely here in Cebu. Ha ha ha.
Not really about preferences or taste but it's really not dark to me.
It would be dark when i set the treble at -2 on the amp.
Or perhaps i just lack more details of comparison since i haven't tried it on a decent amp.
But amp or without, it's not dark either on just the notebook and the X3 set on DAC .
i did not audition the HD650 either as i ordered it online from Moon Audio t/w the BDV3 cable.
Make no mistake, i love the sound of the HD650 as i am hearing it.
I think you should get the Burson of donkeanu. Donkeanu i think would accept layaway plan. ha ha ha ...
Too bad my mind is set on the PB2 & perhaps DB2 as i already have the balanced cable.
Have you checked out the Centrance Hifi M8 or the Cypher Labs Theorem 720? they are both portable amp+dac in 1 and at the same price range as those iBassos combined, less weight and and less device in your stack to carry. check out the reviews at head-fi, they are all the rage in portables these days
