ask markyap.. he knows more about this too.. maybe he can fill in details..
yes quad is right...in general, 16m colors will most likely offer better visuals/better quality images. 256k is already visually stunning coming from a small device such as a phone. most cant tell without putting both side by side. with 32bit color (16m) you get true color potential allowing smother color tone transition. the levels of skintone can show up better.
anyways, its not limited to those factors. you also have to take into account the backlight, contrast ratio, response time, etc. not to mention the graphics engine, software/firmware implementation, etc.

example, a phone that has poor rendering of large jpg can produce visually inferior image on the phone.
i notice for example new version of n95 renders images that are around 640x480 poorly, comes out a little soft on the screen. even worst when running it as slideshow. however images reduced to 430x280 or even 500x330 look better on the screen of an N95.
old version of n95 actually renders the images sharper and more vivid. slideshow is smooth on the old and a bit jerky on the n95 new version
this proves firmware and graphics engine implementation plays a big factor. notice how pic taken with the camera phone look so good in the phone but when loaded in other phones even with same lcd size and colors or when viewed in the computer its not as stunning...that the difference of rendering...again its about implementation.

heres the deal, just because the lcd of the device can deliver 16m colors doesnt mean the device is programed to deliver 16m colors.
take for example you computer...some graphics card can only produce up to highcolor range 64k colors (not true color of 16m) at certain resolutions. so even though your monitor can handle more colors, the graphics engine only spit out 64k color.

huh?? both 6300 and n95 are 240x320 resolution and both lcds are 16m TFT screens...the only difference is n95 has a bigger size lcd at 40x53mm vs 31 x 41 mm of the 6300...
thus pixels are more compacted in the 6300 lcd...

its as simple as this, the pixels on N95 are bigger than 6300, therefore n95's images look more squary "pixeliated" bah

then your talking about pixel pitch (as i posted mas compacted ang pixels sa 6300)...thats not resolution...
btw to the naked eye, you wont see the pixel size anyways...
and contrary to what you are saying...
actually images on the n95 generally will look better because of it bigger physical size...

take for example n80 and n73...viewing images on the n73 larger screen is such a joy compated to the higher resolution and higher pixel pitch of the n80...although finer ang n80...photos(group shots/fullbody/halfbody/with background scenes) just looks better on a bigger screen.

do you like watching movies on you laptop/pc monitor with 15 to 17inch size or watch it on a 32inch TV...although the lcd and pc monitor have higher resolution, its still looks better watching it on a bigger TV even though it has less resolution and less pixel pitch.

^ I disagree about watching movies are better on an aged technology television instead of an LCD, basig dili Glare-type ang LCD sa imu Laptop Markyap and i dont like to switch my LCD TV back to the stone-age, mas nice ang LCD kay pwede ra i-hang anywhere consumes less space and looks better. pero kanya kanya mana bro basin d.i. ug ganahan ka adtong black & white tvs i respect that.

i didnt say lcd tv (or those high def once)...smaller laptop size lcd watching movies or watching em on a bigger older crt 32" or bigger TV.
not talking about wide screen or the likes sad ha...just a 800x600 resolution LCD monitor vs 32" 200-400 lines colored crt TV...asa ka pili mutanaw VCD...
