i'm not an english language expert but i know some basic rules. a good foundation starts with mastering the basic tenses:
1. simple present tense
2. present progressive tense
3. past tense
4. future tense

mao na pinaka basic. i know, we had these lessons back in elementary and HS and somehow didn't learn everything. i know why, kay boring kaayu pagka tudlo puro nalang sheet exercises na dili pa jud relevant sa kinabuhi nato at that time. anway, my suggestion in starting with the simple present tense is to write something on "MY DAILY ROUTINE". sa binisaya pa, ang akong ginabuhat kada adlaw. di ba mo ingon man ta, "mo mata ko alas 6:00 sa buntag. unya maligo, mo kaon, mag ilis. mo biya sa balay mga alas 7:30...." Its english counterpart would be, "i wake up 6:00 am. I take a shower, eat breakfast, change clothes. Then I leave for work." simple ra? then tell me about someone else's daily routine. we now say, "she wakes up 8:00 am, eats breakfast, takes a shower..". There, we are now applying subject-verb agreement.

i know basic kaayu sa pero daghan man gihapon masayop ani. so that's my suggestion. start with the basic tenses and with subject-verb agreement.

and reading english books help a lot too.. especially novels. and it's the most fun..

start with the basic...after all sentences are composed of WORDS...right?

what is a noun? pronoun? adjective? verb (linking of action verbs)? preposition? an article (a, an, the)?

I've got great help from reading books (any english books) and by watching movies.

Books --> Keeps me updated with anything new. English evolves, new words just pops up anytime
Movies --> For proper pronunciation and sentence construction. English nowadays are more free and flexible than before.

just strictly follow the rules.
read, read, and read.
a dictionary is one indispensable powerful tool. always, as in ALWAYS, consult one when in doubt.
one can never outgrow the need to learn so be a diligent student each day in this classroom called life.
