If America attacks Syria without its troops setting foot on Syrian soil, where would they launch their armaments from? If they will drag their ally Israel into these mess, then it will be WW3.
And why would America be too keen on bypassing the Security Council and do it singlehandedly without the blessings of the UN?
America is pretty sure that such a move will not be supported by Russia and China.

I did not say I want chinese bases in close proximity to our borders. What I was referring to was a reply to a full-scale invasion. Obviously a foreign presence close to our borders is still not an invasion. I don't know what made you say that.

Russia's Putin might change his mind and side with the USA if Syria's Assad is guilty and responsible for the attacks.

IMO even if not, Russia will not side with U.S because Mr. Putin knows the whole story.
That is why the U.S is not bringing the issue of attack to the Security Council because they know that it will never get the signatures of both Russia & China.
Russia doesn't want to commit the same mistake again as what happened in Iraq.
The Russian naval fleet is there to target Saudi Arabia. The Arab country that is pressuring Russia to side with the U.S.
