Over 70 homes damaged by tornado in Cebu
Wednesday, June 19, 2013
CEBU CITY (Updated) -- A tornado damaged more than 70 homes in coastal barangays of Minglanilla town and Talisay City Tuesday afternoon, peeling the roofs off some houses and uprooting trees.
It struck Minglanilla past 2 p.m. and Talisay City around 3:45 p.m., according to reports that reached the Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC).
Executive director Neil Sanchez confirmed the worst-hit barangays were Sitio Libo, Barangay Mohon in Talisay City and Barangay Tungkil in Minglanilla town.
As the winds, whirling at an estimated at 200 kilometers per hour, howled over their heads, residents hid inside their homes.
Barangay officials of Tungkil, Minglanilla are planning to declare a state of calamity, after seeing how the tornado damaged at least 72 houses, easily lifting the roofs off some structures.
Aldwin Dechosa, a resident of Deca Homes Phase 3 Subdivision, said he was buying some things from a store when he noticed that the sky suddenly darkened.
“The next thing we knew, a strong wind suddenly blew and some of the trees in our subdivision were being torn apart,” Dechosa said.
When he saw that some of the galvanized iron sheets of his neighbors’ houses were starting to fly off, Dechosa immediately sought shelter in a nearby house.
About 35 of Dechosa’s neighbors lost part of their roofs when the tornado passed by.
In Villa Feliza Subdivision, a few meters away from Deca Homes, about 15 houses were heavily damaged. While some houses lost parts of their roofs, Rowena Mondonedo’s two-storey house was stripped of its entire roof, which landed some two meters away.
In Augustina Village, which is still located in Tungkil, five houses were heavily damaged by the tornado as well.
Pupils of the Tungkil Elementary School were dismissed early.
Barangay Tungkil Chief Manolo Delgado told reporters that the estimated property damage caused by tornado easily reached more than P1 million.
He and his councilors will meet today, Wednesday, to discuss the possible declaration of a state of calamity. Delgado also serves as president of Minglanilla’s Association of Barangay Councils.
Delgado revealed that this is not the first time a tornado hit the barangay. He recalled similar incidents in 2004 and 1999.
After hitting houses in Minglanilla on Tuesday, the tornado also struck other homes in Talisay City.
About seven houses in Sitio Libo, Barangay Mohon were destroyed, while a private school in Barangay Pooc was damaged.
Talisay City Councilor Danilo Caballero told Sun.Star Cebu that after they were contacted by officials there, he and fellow City Councilor Valeriano Ylanan immediately visited the area.
Aside from providing financial aid, they also provided a sack of rice to the affected residents.
Caballero added that the Talisay City Social Welfare and Development Office will visit the area to assess what damage the tornado caused.
An official of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan Station said tornadoes remain very rare in the country.
Jomar Eclarino, Pagasa Mactan weather specialist, said tornadoes are often formed when cumulo-nimbus clouds or thunderstorm clouds gather. Within the clouds, a giant vacuum created when cold and hot air meet can turn into a tornado.
If you see anything like it, Eclarino warned the public, stay indoors.
Evelyn Senajon, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) head, said a team will also visit the sites in Talisay and Minglanilla to assess how things are and to give away assistance.
An unconfirmed number of residents were brought to the Talisay District Hospital, for injuries sustained during the tornado.
A small fish port in Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla was also reportedly damaged. (With Oscar C. Pineda/Sun.Star Cebu)
