as Gareb points out, there are already alot of attempts in the field of cognitive science, neuroscience and philosophy that deals with this question. However, the problem has always been the relation between specific brain waves to that of "the belief of god." Exactly in what what does this subjective "belief of god" is equivalent to the objective data measure from, say, specific brainwave activity.
You could all watch the first episode of Discovery's Through the Wormhole series entitled: "Is there a Creator".
you can always "experiment"....jump out from a ship/boat in the middle of the sea....and see if you can "walk" Liked This hehe

god was an early invention of man to rationalize how the world works (why does it rain? , because the god of rain makes sure that plants get watered.)
today we are using science to make close approximations of how the world works.
Human beings are born to think. We always seek an explanation for things. If something unexplainable occurs, we fill in the gap.
And that's where religion comes in. Im not saying that God is just a figment of our imagination; I do believe in the Creator. But the reason why people could so easily believe something not tangible to the senses, is because it is human nature to avoid anxiety from an unknown.
