i agree, i think the Cardinal's point is that pedophillia needs to be treated before it becomes a crime through child molestation..
which supposedly would lead people NOT to hate the person with such condition as it is not a crime but an illness.
but i think most of us did not see his point.
however personally i believe crimes committed because of this condition is still and should be punishable by law.
wa ta kahibaw sa ilang pagka priso, mas ma treat ilang psychological condition..ug makatabang nila nga ma overcome ilang illness.
But people who are diagnosed with this condition should be treated with compassion apart from professional help 'cause they too were just victims of a cruel past and nature
and most of all,should be kept away from children..hehehe

Based on that website Pedophilia is indeed considered by doctors as a mental illness, something that should be treated (as the cardinal says should be) and is different from Child Molesters who are actually the ones committing the crime. I think that's what the cardinal was insinuating and he is right according to American Psychiatric Association. Personally, I always believed those two were the same.

Being a psychology graduate, I believe that pedophilia is more of a sexual disorder, as defined by the DSM-IV-TR, a manual of mental disorders used by almost every practitioner in the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry.

Pedophilia can actually exist even kung walay gi-molest na bata. Kung naa kay pagnanasa sa usa ka bata, to the point that it has affected your way of life, but not to the point na gi-sexually abuse ang bata, then technically it can still be considered as pedophilia.

Di man siguro pwede na i-priso ang usa ka tawo gikan kay na-arouse siya kung makatan-aw ug usa ka bata, even if wala sad siya'y gibuhat sa mga bata.

That's not funny. It's easy to make fun of them kay dili ka pedophile. Pero I bet that deep inside, some of these people don't like to be pedophiles at all. Some may have these urges, but are trying very hard to control themselves para wala sila'y mabuhat na dautan sa uban.

And how sure are you that you're not a pedophile? Better yet, how sure are you that you don't have a mental illness? Personally, I believe that everyone can have a mental illness; it simply depends on whether this has a negative effect on their life or not.

Shoplifting, by itself, is not an illness. However, a mental illness may cause someone to shoplift.

The same thing with pedophilia. Molesting a child is not the illness. If it was driven by pedophilia, then pedophilia is the illness involved.

For those who have been arguing about this matter, here's an update: the South African cardinal has already apologized on the issue. But here's an interesting quote to take note of:

That's when the wheels came off. I now stand accused of saying that pedophilia is a mental condition or disorder and not a crime," Napier said in his statement.

"Child sexual abuse is a heinous crime among other things because of the damage it does to the child. In that concern I include the abused who has become an abuser."

If I would accept what he has literally stated, then I still agree with his position. Pedophilia is an illness; child sexual abuse is a crime.

Kung na-arouse ka kung kita ka ug bata, that may be counted as pedophilia already, or at least a sign of it. Pero kung wala sad kay nabuhat na dautan sa bata, dili pa siya mahimong krimen.

I would suggest to everyone to look up on the definition of pedophilia first before commenting any further. I've checked two sources and both stressed out "sexual attraction", which may or may not include child abuse.
