If you can get 500 kilobytes or kilobits on a dial-up connection, then I have a bridge to sell you. 56 kbps is 56 kilobits per second, or roughly 56,000 bits per second, or 7 kilobytes per second (which most of us never get anyway). Dial-up connections use the voice frequencies (0 to 4 khz) of the telephone line, and that range of frequencies can handle only so much before it chokes. Those so-called "dial-up accelerators" are nothing more but a combination of smart-caching, image compression, and web proxy techniques.
