@noy, I think you share the common misconception on the word "theory" as used in science. Let me help you out there, just to keep you up-to-date on the current status of Darwin's Theory of Evolution in mainstream science.
From the American Association for the Advancement of Science:
A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world.
The theory of biological evolution is more than "just a theory." It is as factual an explanation of the universe as the atomic theory of matter or the germ theory of disease. Our understanding of gravity is still a work in progress. But
the phenomenon of gravity, like evolution, is an accepted fact.
As far as mainstream science is concerned, the phenomenon of Evolution is a fact and Darwin's Theory of Evolution explains that phenomenon. I hope the distinction, as stated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is clear.
@noy, you're a Roman Catholic. As far as the Catholic Church is concerned, they've already stated their position on the Theory of Evolution....no less than Pope John Paul II made it clear. It's just unfortunate that a lot of Catholics align themselves with the fundamentalists' Creationism stance. I hope you can one day visit the Vatican Observatory and ask the scientists there why they think Darwin's theory is a well-substantiated one.
I'm not insisting that people must believe in Darwin's theory. I'm just correcting the misconceptions people have about it and stating my stance on the matter. How people react to my comments is entirely up to them.
