Nerissa is One Cebu's 6th dist. Representative
    By Gregg M. Rubio/MBG (The Freeman) Updated October 01, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (2)

CEBU, Philippines - Rep. Pablo John Garcia introduced former Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz as One Cebu Party’s sixth district congressional bet in a gathering last Saturday night at Marco Polo Plaza.

However, Soon-Ruiz refused to comment if it was already an official endorsement saying One Cebu will make a formal proclamation tomorrow.

“Di lang nako i-preempt kay may formal announcement man si Pablo John,” Soon-Ruiz told The FREEMAN.

Other candidates of One Cebu party present during the gathering were former Consolacion Mayor Avelino Gungob and Cordova Vice Mayor Rodrigo Jumao-as.

Gungob and Jumao-as are running for mayor in their respective towns, which both belong to the sixth district.

Soon-Ruiz was the only political figure from Mandaue City who attended the gathering.

One Cebu is reportedly not fielding candidates in Mandaue City against the group of Mayor Jonas Cortes because of the good relationship between Cortes and the Garcias.

But Pablo John denied the report.

Soon-Ruiz will be running against incumbent Rep. Gabriel Luis Quisumbing next elections.

Quisumbing lost to Soon-Ruiz in the 2007 congressional race.

After serving her last term as congresswoman, Ruiz ran for mayor under One Cebu party in 2010 but lost to Cortes.

She initially expressed support for the candidacy One Cebu’s presidential bet, Gilberto Teodoro, but later on flipped and supported Manuel Villar.

Cortes tapped Soon-Ruiz as consultant for health programs but her contract expired yesterday.

Soon-Ruiz said she is just waiting for the decision of One Cebu president Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and her brother, Pablo John, pending negotiations with businessman Glenn Soco.

There were reports that Soco, Gwendolyn’s runningmate in the 2010 elections but lost to the late Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez, is also eyeing the sixth district’s congressional post.

But One Cebu reportedly offered him the Provincial Board slot.

Soco earlier expressed his intention to run again for vice governor but Pablo John picked former Danao City vice mayor Ramon “Boboy” Durano IV. (FREEMAN)

    Soon-Ruiz to run against Quisumbing

AFTER a failed run for Mandaue City’s mayorship in 2010, former legislator Nerissa Soon-Ruiz yesterday said she will run for Cebu’s 6th congressional district against incumbent Rep. Luigi Quisumbing.
The physician, who was tapped as consultant for health programs by Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, is running under the One Cebu party.
Although Mayor Cortes is with the Liberal Party, Once Cebu will adopt his local slate and not field a candidate against him, she said.
Soon-Ruiz said she’s only waiting for the decision of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and her brother, Rep. Pablo John Garcia on their negotiations with businessman Glenn Soco.
She said Soco was offered a a slot as Provincial Board member in the 6th district to keep him in the party’s fold after he was passed over as runningmate to Pablo John in favor of former Danao City vice mayor Ramon “Boboy” Durano IV.
Soon-Ruiz said the Garcias met Soco yesterday to finalize matters. In case Soco wants to run for Cebu’s 6th district as congressman, Soon-Ruiz said she is ready to give way.
“Based on past One Cebu meetings, I’m 80 to 90 percent sure that I would run for Congress since the party’s finished its PB lineup. I’m just waiting for word like a faithful party soldier. Whatever is the order I follow,” Soon-Ruiz said in a radio interview.
“One Cebu’s doesn’t have a local slate because of the smooth relations between Cortes and Garcia and she said Mandaue City was run well by the mayor,” Soon-Ruiz said.
She said she doesn’t hold a grudge against Cortes. “Our relations are good. We decided to bury our political animosities,” Soon-Ruiz said. Correspondents Jhunnex Napallacan and Norman V. Mendoza
